After Divorcing my Captain Husband (Chloe and Michael)

Chapter 586 Are You a Couple?

Maggie was stunned. "Why are you saying sorry? You don't need to apologize! You haven't done anything wrong!"

She wasn't naive. She knew what his apology meant, but she refused to accept it.

"Maggie, you're an amazing person. You'll meet someone better. My dad was right back then. I'm not good enough for you."

James had often wondered if things might have turned out differently had he chosen another path if he and Maggie might have had a chance.

But the truth was, whether he joined the army or not, their relationship was doomed.

Back then, he was too young and focused only on love, while she had so many concerns like permanent residence and future prospects. She could hardly spare any for him. From the very beginning, they were out of sync and incompatible.

"No, you weren't beneath me. Didn't you once say that love can overcome anything? We could have worked through it together!"

James shook his head. "Love can't overcome everything. Compatibility can."

And he and Maggie were not compatible.

"Thank you for coming to see me today, but I'm tired now. You should go."

With that, James turned away from Maggie's pleading and sadness and looked over at Chloe instead. "Chloe, please show her out."

Chloe felt a twinge of annoyance, thinking, "So I'm just his babysitter now!"

But on second thought, she realized that was pretty much her role at the moment.

Knowing full well that stepping in would probably make Maggie dislike her even more, Chloe had no choice but to approach her. "Ms. Xander, let me walk you out." Seeing that James was no longer even looking at her, Maggie understood that if she insisted on staying, she would only make him resent her.Têxt belongs to NôvelDrama.Org.

As she followed Chloe downstairs, Chloe asked, "Do you have a place to stay, Ms. Xander?"

Maggie nodded. "Yes, I'm staying at a hotel."

When Chloe hailed a taxi for her, Maggie turned to her. "Chloe, you and James aren't a couple, are you?"

Chloe was momentarily taken aback. Instead of answering, she kept a polite smile. "Take care, Ms. Xander."

After sending Maggie off, Chloe stormed back upstairs, ready to confront James.

She thought, "He did that on purpose, making me deal with Maggie! This infuriating man!"

But when she pushed open the door to his room, she found that James had already fallen asleep with her phone still in his hand.

In his sleep, he looked so peaceful and nothing like the person he was when awake.

Chloe's anger melted away, at least most of it. After all, he had surgery the next day. As for Maggie... that could wait until after his surgery.

She carefully retrieved her phone from his hand and sat down on the nearby sofa.

Looking at his profile, Chloe couldn't understand why he didn't want to get back together with Maggie.

Wasn't he the one who used to drink himself into a stupor over her? And now, he was treating her so coldly.

She couldn't help but think that James was just a man too proud to show his true feelings.

Chloe didn't even remember when she dozed off on the sofa. All she knew was that the next morning, she was woken up by the noise of the nurse coming in.

As she woke up, the first thing she saw was James' teasing eyes.

He tossed The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from his bed to her. Chloe, startled, caught it clumsily, and before she could say anything, James said, "Sleepyhead, read it to me when I get out of surgery." Chloe's heart skipped a beat as she watched him being wheeled into the operating room by a group of nurses.

Stepping out of the room, she noticed Maggie standing nearby, holding a breakfast tray in her hands.
