After her rebirth

Chapter 246

Clara saw the guilty look on Desmond's face and knew there was definitely something he was hiding.

But she still remained understanding and pretended to be strong, "It's okay, Desmond. I'm just happy you came. Don't worry, I'm fine. I can handle it myself..."

As she spoke, Clara suddenly lowered her head, and tears began to fall uncontrollably.

Not wanting Desmond to see, she deliberately turned slightly, "Sorry, Desmond, I need to go to the bathroom."

As she was about to get out of bed, Desmond grabbed her, "Clara, I'm sorry, it's my fault. I've been really busy lately. The company took on a big project, and you know, for our future, I need to perform well."

Clara leaned into Desmond's arms, "I know."

Desmond felt helpless.

It wasn't that he didn't want to come or that he didn't receive Clara's messages and calls.

It was just that there were rumors saying Clara had hired someone to kill her father. When Emily found out, she strictly forbade him from visiting. He originally didn't listen and wanted to come and find out the truth no matter what.

But he didn't expect Gabriel to get involved as well.

He thought he would wait until things calmed down before visiting her, but it only got

worse.

Until the day Lucas visited personally, Gabriel, although not pleased, eventually agreed. Clara and Desmond held each other for a while before slowly letting go.

Clara looked up, her tear-filled eyes gazing at Desmond, "Desmond, do you believe I hired someone to kill my father?"

Desmond immediately shook his head, "Of course not, otherwise why would I be here?"

He always believed in Clara; it was his parents who didn't. But what they said wasn't wrong either, and he was helpless.noveldrama

Desmond gently wiped Clara's tears, "How could that be? The innocent will be proven innocent. Besides, if it were true, the police would have arrested you by now, wouldn't they?"

Clara's face turned pale.

The police hadn't arrested her because there was no evidence yet.

But they would definitely keep investigating.

She thought she had done everything perfectly, but what if?

So, the Manners family and she wanted to suppress this matter. The police had so many cases to handle every day, and this wasn't a major case. As time passed, some evidence would be harder to find, and the matter would gradually fade away.

But now, with the rumors spreading wildly and the high attention, the police might allocate more resources to investigate.

Clara sighed slightly, "But rumors can really stir people's hearts. Don't you remember? There was a popular TV actor who played a villain so convincingly that people threw rotten eggs at her when she went to the market."

Speaking of this, Clara felt uneasy, "If this matter keeps spreading, some people who don't know the truth might really think I did such a thing. Look at Ella... didn't she hurt me?"

Desmond understood what Clara meant.

He pondered for a moment and then asked, "Clara, why did this matter escalate like this? Do you know who's behind this slander?"

A cold glint flashed in Clara's eyes, but her face showed a helpless expression, "It's Laura. After her family went bankrupt, nothing went well for her... I don't know why."

"Does she have a grudge against you?"

"Of course not," Clara quickly explained, "I don't know why she's targeting me. She came to the hospital last time and told me she reported it to the police in her real name. She seemed crazy, saying she was jealous of my loving parents and brothers, and a fiancé as good as you..."

"Real name report?" Desmond was a bit surprised.

If that were the case, did it mean Laura really had something?

He looked at Clara with a hint of doubt.

He had always believed in Clara's character.

Clara keenly sensed Desmond's change and immediately realized she had said something wrong. So she quickly said, "Laura's mind has been a bit off lately, and she even tried to seduce my father. You know, there's a big age difference between them." Desmond nodded, "Yes, her behavior is indeed incomprehensible."

Clara immediately said, "That's why I don't believe she reported it in her real name. She said that to scare me. But I haven't done anything wrong, so why should I be afraid?"

"I guess she reported it anonymously," Clara continued, feeling more justified, "Even if it was anonymous, the police wouldn't ignore a murder case. So, it's normal for them to investigate."

She knew Desmond well. Once he believed what she said, he wouldn't check further. Even if he did go to the police, they wouldn't tell him anything.

Real name report, only a few leaders within the police would know about that.

Desmond nodded after hearing Clara's explanation; it did make sense.

Then he changed the subject and asked, "She did all this just out of jealousy?" It was indeed strange.

Clara knew that such a reason alone was hard to believe, so she continued, "She seems to have been getting close to Katniss lately. Katniss has always disliked me and said she wanted to take everything I have..."

Desmond's face grew colder as he listened, "So, the two of them conspired to use a dead person to frame you?"

Clara shook her head, looking innocent, "I really don't know. These are all baseless claims, and it's hard to say anything openly. I don't know what to do to make them stop."

Desmond felt even more pity for Clara seeing her like this, "Don't worry, you're doing great. It's their evil hearts that make them do such despicable things."

Clara bit her lip and looked pitifully at Desmond, "Desmond, I have no other way now. I can only ask for your help. I swear I didn't harm my father. If I did, may I go to hell..."

She deliberately mentioned her father to blur the lines of her so-called oath.

Although she believed in science, she subconsciously felt something was lingering around her.

She was afraid that if she swore explicitly, she might really face retribution.
