As Nelly approached the company, a sense of unease washed over her. The sight of Spencer’s car parked there only intensified her discomfort. It was clear he had been waiting for her. There was no escape from this confrontation.
With a deep breath, Nelly walked up to the car and entered, finding Spencer engrossed in his phone. Startled by her presence, he quickly glanced out of the car before she silenced him. “Don’t bother looking around. It’s just us,” she declared.
Relieved, Spencer finally met her gaze, his expression filled with unhappiness. “Nelly, don’t you have something to tell me?” he asked.
“It was an accident,” Nelly immediately explained, her voice firm. “I tried calling and messaging you, but you never answered or returned my calls.”
“I… I left my phone in the car. I didn’t see your calls or messages,” Spencer replied, his voice heavy with guilt.
“Then it’s not my fault,” Nelly nonchalantly remarked. She had done everything she could, and she refused to shoulder any blame.
Spencer looked at her, a deep frown etched on his face. “You should have let me know that Thalia would be there too.”
“I informed you as soon as I found out. I had no prior knowledge,” Nelly replied, her indifference apparent. Spencer trusted her words, knowing she wasn’t one to lie, especially about something like this.
Yet, an unexplainable feeling gnawed at him. After a long silence, Spencer stared at Nelly, his voice filled with inquiry. “So, are your children close with Thalia?”
Nelly nodded. “Yes, they’re close friends.”
Spencer’s frown deepened. Despite not seeing Thalia for years, he knew enough about her. Narrowing his eyes, he questioned Nelly, “You know she’s a member of Darknetz? Aren’t you worried?”
After a momentary silence, she threw his questions back at him. “What is there to worry about? That she might harm the children?”
Spencer understood that Thalia wouldn’t intentionally hurt the three children, but if it aligned with her mission, she might. He looked at Nelly, his concern evident. “It’s strange that you’re not worried, considering who she is. Logically, you should have taken precautions if she’s so close to them. Yet, you seem completely unconcerned.” Nelly’s behavior puzzled him. It was unlike her.
Surprisingly, Nelly pursed her lips and stated, “What makes you think I haven’t taken any precautions?”
Spencer narrowed his eyes. “So, you’re just going to let them continue being friends?”
“I don’t want to hinder them from making friends. And if you truly understood our children, you wouldn’t find their friendship with Thalia odd,” Nelly replied nonchalantly.
Spencer couldn’t make sense of her words. “What do you mean?”
Nelly took a deep breath before responding, “Never mind. The important thing is that Thalia isn’t a threat. Speaking of which, what do you intend to do about her?”
Spencer’s eyes darkened as he heard her question. A wry smile emerged on his lips. “What can I do?”
Observing him, Nelly commented, “Thalia is a good girl. You should cherish her.”
“Nobody knows that better than me, but that’s precisely why I’m not right for her,” Spencer confessed softly, a tinge of sorrow in his eyes.
Taken aback, Nelly didn’t know how to respond. She struggled to take care of her own affairs, let alone meddle in others’. Being not so adept at resolving relationship problems, she chose to remain silent. But Spencer spoke up again, shocking her. “Yesterday, your son warned me not to hurt her, or he wouldn’t let me off.”Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
“Was it Tony?” Spencer nodded.
With a smile, Nelly warned him, “Then I suggest you listen to Tony and cherish what you have now. Otherwise, he might just make you regret it.”
Spencer frowned at her remark. “Is it not enough that you won’t console me? Must you also make sarcastic comments? If we hadn’t come here, we wouldn’t have crossed paths with Thalia.”
Nelly responded, her voice filled with conviction, “Don’t you think it’s fate? This is a chance for you to set things right. There’s no use hiding.”
Spencer knew she was right, but fear held him back. He would rather avoid Thalia than have her resent him for the rest of her life. Besides, he had already hurt her once, and he didn’t want history to repeat itself.
Seeing the hesitation on Spencer’s face, Nelly spoke again. “Alright. Now that things have come this far, it’s up to you to handle it. It’s getting late, I should go.”
“Hold on!” Spencer called out.
Turning around, Nelly faced him, and he handed her a bag. “These are the birthday presents for the kids. I didn’t get a chance to give them yesterday.”
Nelly picked up one of the elegantly wrapped boxes and opened it, revealing a unique necklace. “What’s this?” she asked.
Spencer explained, “With this necklace, whoever recognizes it will provide unconditional help to your children, regardless of their location or the danger they face.”
Nelly was taken aback by his words. The presents he had prepared were valuable and would serve as the children’s protection. After a brief moment of contemplation, she asked, “Are you not angry that Tony threatened you?”
“Do you think I would hold a grudge against a child?” Spencer retorted.
A smile graced Nelly’s lips as she replied, “Since these gifts hold such significance, you should give them to the kids yourself.” With that, she handed the presents back to him.
“Do you honestly think I would dare to show my face to them again?” Spencer furrowed his brow.
“What? You want to be a coward forever?” Nelly retorted.
“I just don’t want things to reach a point of no return,” Spencer defended himself.
“Well, you certainly worded that nicely,” Nelly commented sarcastically.
“Do you still want the necklaces or not?” Spencer rebuked.
“Of course, I do!” Nelly exclaimed, taking the presents back and protecting them with her life. It was always better to be prepared, and she was no fool. After receiving the gifts, Nelly thanked Spencer on behalf of the children.
Spencer responded, “Just make sure they don’t threaten me next time.”
“I have no control over that,” Nelly replied, leaving Spencer speechless.
As Nelly placed the bag of gifts in her own bag, Spencer spoke up again. “I’ll be away for a while. I’ll contact you the next time you need medical attention.”
Nelly looked at him and nodded.
