26 Reckoning and Disillusionment
Alex stood firm, his resolve unshaken as he addressed Bella. “I’ll help you this one last time. After this, you’re on your own. Move abroad, rebuild your life. Our paths won’t cross again,” he stated, his voice devoid of any warmth.
Turning his attention to Johnson, who had accompanied Bella to the hospital, Alex’s gaze was sharp and probing. Johnson, sensing the scrutiny, grew increasingly nervous. © 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.
“Why are you here?” Alex asked, his tone implying he already knew the answer wouldn’t satisfy him.
Johnson, fumbling for words, tried to assure his brother of his good behavior, but Alex was unconvinced. Without another word, he motioned for Johnson to follow him outside.
Once outside, Alex lit a cigarette, a rare sign of stress. Johnson stood silently, not daring to interrupt. However, his curiosity got the better of him.
“Is it true about you and Emma? She didn’t… demand money from us, did she?” Johnson ventured, his tone laced with suspicion and scorn.
Alex, stunned by Johnson’s audacity, couldn’t believe the venom in his brother’s words. “What did you see her take?” he questioned, his disappointment in Johnson growing.
Johnson’s response was filled with unfounded accusations and contempt for Emma. He painted her as a schemer, someone out to take advantage of their family’s wealth.
Alex listened, aghast at the extent of Johnson’s animosity towards Emma, based on nothing but conjecture and prejudice. He realized with a heavy heart how little he knew his own brother.
His frustration with Johnson’s arrogance and sense of entitlement boiled over. “Where do you think all this comes from, Johnson? It’s because of my hard work. We’re no different from anyone else. It’s only our circumstances that have changed,” Alex said, his voice rising.
The realization that his success and indulgence had spoiled Johnson was a bitter pill to swallow. He saw now how his negligence had allowed Johnson’s sense of superiority to fester unchecked.
As Johnson continued to disparage Emma, Alex’s anger reached its breaking point. In a rare moment of fury, he struck Johnson across the face a physical manifestation of his disillusionment and. disappointment.
Johnson, shocked and hurt, fell to the ground from where he could only watch as Alex drove away, leaving him to grapple with the reality of his brother’s anger and the consequences of his own misguided beliefs.
As Johnson got to his feet and stood there, one hand to his face to nurse his stinging cheek, resentment bubbled within him. He blamed Emma for the rift between him and his brother, for the change in Alex that he couldn’t comprehend.
16. Reckoning and Podibodonment
In his heart, Johnson vowed that Emma would pay for this perceived Injustice. He glanced back at the hospital, his resentment now extending to Bella as well. In his eyes, neither woman deserved the life they had, a life he felt was rightfully his.
The events of the day marked a turning point for Alex, Johnson, and their tangled relationships. For Alex, it was a painful acknowledgment of his family’s flaws and his role in them. For Johnson, it was at
wake–up call, one that he chose to ignore, blinded by his own bitterness and entitlement.
