Chapter 265
Janice glanced at Sarah's hand. "Then go ahead. Do you need me to buy you a megaphone? Or maybe provide a car so you can drive around town and announce it?"
She nodded to herself. "I think that sounds like a great idea."
Without hesitation, the bodyguards drove over. They even grabbed a megaphone from the factory before pulling Sarah into the car.
With her hands tucked into the pockets of her coat, Janice watched with amusement as Sarah's expression shifted from arrogance to panic. She said to her, "Enjoy yourself. Have fun with your little speech."
Many people in town knew that Hugh Fitzgerald had once saved Janice's brother, Jacob.
No one had wished for such a tragedy to happen, and after the incident, Janice had even made Jacob kneel to express his gratitude to Hugh.
Whenever the Fitzgeralds faced difficulties, the siblings had always been the first to step up and help.
They lost their parents when they were young. There was not much they could do, but they had always tried their best.
Who would have thought that this very act of gratitude would become the reason the Fitzgeralds believed they could shackle Janice for life?noveldrama
Inside the car, Sarah sat frozen, unable to process what had just happened. She had only intended to scare Janice. She never expected things to escalate this far. Having been forced into this, she decided to go all in.
Gripping the megaphone, she began shouting as the car moved through the busiest streets of town.
"Janice and Jacob Smith of Yewford Town owe the Fitzgerald family their lives. Yet today, they have turned their backs on that debt, showing nothing but heartless betrayal! Instead of gratitude, they treat their benefactor's children with cold indifference. Let this be a lesson to all of you! Be careful who you help, lest you end up dealing with ungrateful wretches!"
She recorded the message and had it played on a loop as the car drove through the streets. People gathered, pointing fingers and whispering among themselves.
"Sarah!"
The moment she returned home with a triumphant smile, Sarah's sense of victory was shattered as Helena slapped her across the face.
Dazed, Sarah clutched her cheek. "Mom, why did you hit me?"
Helena trembled with fury, slapping her thighs in frustration as tears welled up in her eyes. "Do you even know what you've done? Word of this has already spread everywhere!"
Before Sarah could respond, there was a sudden commotion outside the house. A crowd had gathered.
People arrived carrying baskets filled with unknown contents, hurling them over the walls of the front yard one by one. Along with the flying objects came furious voices.
"You're the real heartless ones! Saving a life is an act of kindness, not a transaction! Mr. Fitzgerald saved someone because he was a man of virtue, not because he expected anything in return! And what did the Smith siblings do? They took care of your family whenever you needed it! And what did your son do in return? He repaid their kindness with betrayal! He doesn't deserve to call himself a man!"
"Don't think we don't know what kind of disgraceful things you did in Greenfield City!"
"Your family is an embarrassment to Yewford Town!"
Rotten eggs and wilted vegetables were the least of their worries. Someone even had the audacity to toss over some moldy cheese. The foul stench was so unbearable that Sarah nearly gagged on the spot.
Furious, she clenched her fists and shouted back, "What did she promise you for you to defend her like this? She cheated on my brother and betrayed him, yet none of you are saying a word about it! You're nothing but blind followers!"
"Oh, so now, you're playing the victim?"
A woman in the crowd sneered.
"Wasn't your brother the one responsible for that disgraceful stunt at the wedding, switching out the bride? Janice spent years taking care of your family, and your family threw her away like trash. And now that you're struggling, you have the audacity to demand a high-paying job?
"Look at you, acting all high and mighty when your life is worth nothing more than a scrap of paper! Even my sister-in-law, who's not quite right in the head, has more dignity than you."
Sister-in-law? Sarah recognized the woman. Her so-called "sister-in-law" was a woman who had suffered brain damage as a child due to a high fever.
The woman spat on the ground and sneered, "No wonder your family's cursed. They raised children like you two."
No matter how sharp-tongued she was, Sarah was no match for a group of townswomen who spent their days gossiping together.
Overwhelmed, she clenched her fists and screamed, "No matter what, the Smith family still owes my family a life! That's a fact! What does that have to do with you? Why are sticking your nose where it doesn't betong, acting like self-righteous watchdogs?"
After yelling, she slammed the door shut with force.

The woman from earlier stormed forward and pounded on the door. "Who are you
calling a dog? Get out here and say that to our faces!"
The other women tried to calm her down. "Forget it. They're back in town for
good. We'll have plenty of time to remind them exactly what kind of people they
are."
In small towns, that was just how people were. They loved gossiping about everyone's business, but when an unfair situation arose, they had no problem voicing their disgust.
What do you think?
