Chapter 34 Birthday Banquet
When Louis returned from work and was about to pick up Blanche for the birthday banquet, a maid told him that Blanche was not at home. He was surprised that the woman who had been shouting about wanting to attend his grandmother's birthday celebration had disappeared at a critical moment.
He called Blanche.
"You want to attend the banquet, don't you? If you don't show up now, I won't take you there," Louis said threateningly, arrogant.
However, Blanche told him, "I'm already at the entrance of the banquet all. Hurry up. Everyone is here except for you."
Louis was stunned. He thought to himself, "Hmph! This woman is really anxious. She actually blames me for being late? People who don't know her well may think there is a treasure waiting for her at the party."
When Louis arrived at the entrance of the banquet hall, Blanche was indeed waiting at the door.
Louis sat in his Maybach and honked the horn. Blanche heard it and immediately came over with her dress's hems raised.
As Louis lowered his car window, he fixed his eyes on the woman who had her hair tied up in silver high heels and a light purple dress.
She was exquisitely dressed and looked like a delicate flower. Louis squinted his eyes and thought she looked quite attractive.
"Hurry up and get out of the car," Blanche urged when she found that the man was sitting motionlessly in the car.
Louis collected his thoughts and pushed open the car door, getting out slowly.
He had dressed up more elegantly today, wearing a tailored dark suit he had bought abroad, and shiny handmade leather shoes. His hair was neatly combed, which made him look bossy.
"What are you holding?" Louis noticed that Blanche was holding a big red square box in her left hand.
"These are Miller's biscuits, a birthday gift for grandma."
Since it was a birthday celebration, Blanche also wanted to do something to please Louis's grandmother.
She was a jewelry designer and had initially planned to give Doris a piece of jewelry she designed herself, but Eric had already given Doris a magnolia brooch, so Blanche thought giving more jewelry would be pointless.
Louis arched an eyebrow. No wonder the big red box looked familiar to him. This woman was quite capable. Miller's biscuits were no longer available, but she was still able to get them.
Louis opened the rear car door, took out a gift he had prepared, closed the door, and looked at the grand entrance of the banquet hall.
Blanche extended a finger and pointed at Louis's elbow.
"Shall we link arms?"
All the men who came to congratulate Doris brought their female companions, and they all entered the banquet hall arm in arm. It was a form of etiquette.
Louis looked at Blanche but didn't say anything. Blanche took it as his assent and extended her slender arm, linking it with his.
The two of them walked forward in perfect tandem, their backs forming a matching pair, like a beautiful scenic landscape.
"Why are you so eager to attend my grandmother's birthday celebration? Is there a treasure here? What if I didn't come today? Then you wouldn't be able to go in, would you?" Louis asked, his tone hinting at a threat. NôvelDrama.Org copyrighted © content.
Blanche didn't take it seriously.
"If you didn't come, I'd just get a random man to take me in. It's not that difficult. But if you don't come, you'll be criticized, won't you?"
Louis's eyes gleamed with anger. Not only did Blanche insinuate that he was not a good grandson but she also said she would get a random man to take her in. "How dare this woman!" thought Louis.
He said, "After we go in, find a quiet spot to stay and don't wander around."
"No way. I come to this birthday celebration, not to hide and keep myself out of sight," Blanche pouted.
As soon as she finished her sentence, she felt that Louis stiffened and stopped in his tracks.
If truth be told, Louis really wanted to send Blanche back to the car. But they had arrived at the entrance. He yelled inwardly, "Da*n it! She actually has the audacity to come up with a counter-
threat even before we enter? This woman is unbelievable."
Inside the bustling banquet hall, Old Mrs. Herbart, dressed in a red traditional suit, sat in a chair surrounded by gift-giving guests.
When Louis was about to withdraw his arm from Blanche's grip and distanced himself from her, she released him first.
Blanche glanced at the grand hall with beautiful eyes, subtly indicating that she had already smelled the scent of money from the magnificent decorations.
Louis was taken aback, realizing that the woman had never intended to cling to him.
"That must be Louis and his wife. Come over here," Old Mrs. Herbart called out after she saw the two of them. Though she was old, her voice was still strong and forceful. Her call attracted the attention of all the guests in the banquet hall.
Blanche was surprised to be addressed by Old Mrs. Herbart and immediately went over to her with a sweet smile.
"Hello, Grandma!"
As Blanche approached, Old Mrs. Herbart scrutinized Blanche from head to toe, her face expressionless.
"You're Blanche, right? Your two aunts were right. You are indeed wearing a mask."
The old lady's words sounded severe, and it seemed as if she was dissatisfied with this ugly granddaughter-in-law.
No one spoke up, but two dignified women who stood beside Old Mrs. Herbart couldn't help but smirk, enjoying the spectacle.
