Chapter 1785
Chapter 1785:
“Enough!” Celine shouted, her eyes wild. “I’ve got nothing left to lose. I might as well take you both down with me!” Her finger began to tighten on the trigger.
At that critical moment, Rhys sprinted in front of Harlee and wrapped her in a protective embrace.
A barrage of bullets struck Rhys in the back. He coughed up blood, his body sagging against Harlee.
Harlee stood frozen in shock, her mind reeling. She clutched Rhys tightly, tears streaming down her face.
“Rhys, stay with me…”
At that moment, Patrick and the others rushed up from downstairs. A dozen men quickly formed a human barricade around Harlee and Rhys, while the rest tackled Celine to the floor.
Harlee’s strength faltered, and Rhys collapsed into a pool of his own blood.
“Rhys, you can’t die! Wake up! You have to protect me and Fel— You can’t leave us…” Harlee’s voice trembled, teetering on the edge of a breakdown.
Using the last of his strength, Rhys propped himself up, looked into Harlee’s tear-filled eyes, and managed a weak smile.
“Don’t cry. I’m here…” His words trailed off as he lost consciousness.
Harlee thought the days of Lonnie and Felix’s disappearance were the darkest of her life, but what followed was even more harrowing.
After being rushed to the hospital, Lonnie suffered repeated seizures due to a high fever. Over the month, he became gaunt, permanently confined to a hospital bed.
Serena managed to extricate Felix from the glass case, only to discover he had been injected with a novel virus that would impact his health indefinitely.
Rhys’ condition was critical. Though he wore a bulletproof vest, Celine’s final shot had grazed near his heart. He had been in the ICU for a month with no signs of regaining consciousness.
During this grueling period, Harlee juggled caring for Rhys and worrying about Lonnie and Felix, feeling utterly overwhelmed. She herself had lost significant blood from the gunshot wound in her thigh and had been confined to bed for a week, utterly exhausted yet unable to rest.
Today, Rhys was wheeled into surgery once again.
Outside the operating room, the Sanderson and Green families waited anxiously. Everyone understood the gravity of this operation. If it failed, they might lose Rhys forever.
The surgery lasted nearly eight hours. Afterward, Rhys was once again moved to the intensive care unit.noveldrama
“His vital signs are unstable, and his condition remains critical,” Serena reported, her voice strained after the long hours of operation.
“You should get some rest. I’ll watch over him in the ICU and call you if anything changes,” Stefan offered, noticing her fatigue.
“Okay.” Serena agreed, her steps heavy as she headed toward the lounge. She knew she couldn’t afford to collapse. Lonnie, Felix, Harlee, and Rhys all depended on her care.
“I’ll go in and stay with Rhys. Stefan, you can wait outside,” Harlee said, leaning on her crutches as she approached. Everyone was apprehensive about her insistence on coming in, but arguing would only drain her further.
“You…” Nathaniel began, then sighed and fell silent. He knew there was no point in trying to stop her. Harlee would go in no matter what.
