Everett picked it up, flipped it face down, and grabbed the drink Jamie was holding out. He tilted his head back and downed it in one swift gulp. "Man, oh man."
Jamie was baffled. You'd think that when things got dicey, Everett would step up for Margot. But ever since the rescue, he's been stuck to Selena like glue. Margot got sent back to the hospital, and Everett hasn't even given her the time of day. He wouldn't even pick up her calls.
Jamie, a seasoned player in the game of love, was scratching his head. He couldn't help himself and blurted out, "Everett, I always thought you had a thing for Margot. If you really did, you'd marry her. I just can't buy that you couldn't handle Josh if you wanted to!" Everyone assumed Everett was bowing to Josh's demands, treating Margot unfairly. But Jamie knew better-Everett wasn't one to be stopped when he made up his mind!
Everett shot him a blank look, staying silent.
He pulled out a cigarette pack, tapped one out, slipped it between his lips, lit it up, and with a flick, tossed the lighter back onto the coffee table. He slowly exhaled a cloud of smoke.
Jamie, itching with curiosity, pressed on, "So, do you really like Margot or what?"
The smoke blurred Everett's strong features, making it even harder to read his eyes. Leaning back on the leather sofa, he gazed out the floor-to-ceiling window at the night sky, acting like he hadn't heard a thing.
It was hard to tell if he was ignoring Jamie or just didn't want to talk.
Jamie wasn't ready to give up. He decided to dig in on his own!
He started piecing things together, "You never told me how you and Margot met, or how you two got together. She just appeared out of nowhere four years ago. I found it odd-there wasn't a peep about her before! If there was a woman in your life, I should've known! Unless there's something else..."
Before he could finish, Everett stubbed out his cigarette abruptly, warning coldly, "Shut your mouth. You're driving me nuts!"
Jamie's train of thought derailed, and he clammed up.
"Say one more word, and you're out of here!"
Faced with Everett's piercing gaze, Jamie swallowed hard and decided not to push his luck.
He lifted his glass again, signaling he'd just be the quiet drinking buddy.
For the next few days, Everett was grumpy and didn't visit Selena, thinking he'd spoiled her too much before, making her think she had leverage over him.
Despite her heartache, Selena stayed on top of her meals and meds, and her health was bouncing back well.
During this time, her uncle and Ricky
swung by twice, and Joy rushed
over right after a business trip, even spending a night with her at the
hospital.
The boss even sent her a heartfelt email, approved her leave, and kindly told her she could reach out if she needed anything.
The love and care from family and friends mended her heart a bit.
She realized her life wasn't as bleak as she thought.
A bodyguard stepped in, bowing respectfully, "Ma'am, Dr. Campbell's here to see you. Should I let him in?"
"Absolutely, please do."
Selena sat up, smoothing her hair to look more put together.
Callum walked in, still in his spotless

white coat, exuding calm and grace. He took in her appearance, asking gently, "Selena, how are you feeling today?"
