Chapter 290
"Dr. Campbell... you, I..." Selena's words caught in her throat, unsure how to spill them out.
By all accounts, Callum and Everett were brothers. Sure, they might have clashed over Margot, but when it came to other matters, they usually had each other's backs. Just like how Jaime always stood by Everett, no matter what. But Callum got where she was coming from. "Selena, you've been through so much in this marriage. Everett's my brother, yeah, but you're also my... good friend!"
"If you ever need anything, you can always count on me."
Selena's long lashes trembled, her eyes getting a bit misty. A rush of gratitude warmed her from head to toe. After a moment, she sniffed and gently shook her head. "I've leaned on you too much already."
Helping her might put him at odds with Everett, and it could have consequences for him or the Campbell family. She couldn't just accept his help without thinking about it; she didn't want to drag any of her caring friends into it. Usually, Callum was the master of his emotions, but right now, a look of undeniable loss clouded his eyes. His hand slowly dropped, his fingers tightening bit by bit. "I really wish... you'd lean on me."NôvelDrama.Org holds text © rights.
His voice was so soft Selena barely caught it. She asked gently, "What was that?"
Callum opened his mouth to reply, but Ava's voice cut in from behind, "Ma'am, Dr. Campbell, there you are."
She sounded like she'd been running, a bit out of breath. "Ma'am, it's time for your meds."
Hearing this, Selena nodded, "Alright."
Then she turned to Callum, "Dr. Campbell, I should head back. Thanks for getting me out in the sun, for chatting, for cheering me up. Once I'm all better, dinner's on me!"
Callum swallowed back whatever he was about to say and gave her a tender smile. "Alright, I'll be waiting."
Ava guided Selena back, while Callum stayed put, watching her with a deep gaze.
From the hospital room window, a tall, aloof figure had been observing everything. Everett's lips curled into a cold smile as he swiftly drew the curtains shut, sealing them tightly.
When Selena got back to the room, she saw him sitting there, all stoic. He glanced at her, something tumultuous in his eyes. She froze for a second, wondering when he had shown up. en
"Where've you been?" Everett's voice was cool, detached.
She'd only just stepped out, and his bodyguard probably reported back immediately. He knew exactly where she'd been. He was just looking to pick a fight! Selena, still buoyed by the sunshine and fresh air, was in no mood for his drama. She chose to ignore him and had Ava help her back to bed.
As Ava was about to lend a hand, Everett strode over in a few long strides and scooped her up.
Being lifted so suddenly startled Selena, and she instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck to steady herself, not wanting to fall.
This seemed to please Everett a little, his icy demeanor thawing just a touch. He gently laid her back on the bed.
Once settled, Selena pulled up the blanket, subtly widening the space between them.
Ava brought over the medicine, but before Selena could take it, Everett intercepted. He sat by the bed, insisting, "Let me help you." Selena gritted her teeth. "I have hands, you know. I can do it myself!"
But he acted like he hadn't heard, scooping up some medicine with a spoon, gently blowing on it, and bringing it to her lips.
Selena knew his stubborn streak all too well. When Everett set his mind on something, he wouldn't back down. And this prenatal medicine was too important to waste on a spat. en
