Chapter 0340
Chapter 0340
Shawn's face contorted with bitterness as he held onto Candice tightly, struggling with a surge of emotions that left him unable to speak.
Candice noticed the disappointment clouding old Mr. Elysian’s eyes, feeling a heavy lump in her chest that made it difficult to breathe.
Jessica quickly grasped the situation and moved to support Shawn, casting an apologetic glance at Candice.
"I'll take him home," Jessica offered. "And as for you—"
Before she could finish, Candice hoarsely interjected, "Yes, grandpa’s health should come first."
With a nod from Jessica, she helped Shawn out of the hospital. Candice was torn as she left, standing there.
As she watched Shawn's stooped figure leave, Candice restrained herself from following. She felt utterly at a loss, unable to find the right words to explain or face old Mr. Elysian.
Yet, as Shawn glanced back at her, his expression aged and worn, she felt the weight on her chest grow heavier. His gaze shifted to her stomach, then back to her face.
After a moment, he sighed quietly and added, "You have such an intense reaction. This worries me. I'll take you home."
His words only intensified the weight in Candice's chest, nearly bringing her to tears.
Given Candice's stare, Shawn sighed again and continued, "This is definitely a shock. You must allow me time to process this. No matter how confused I am, I can't turn a blind eye to
the fact that you're expecting a child now.”
After Shawn learned about her pregnancy, Candice anticipated many reactions, including sadness and detachment, but never this. With her mouth pursed, she seemed at a loss for
words.
A solemn reminder took the place of Jessica's initial surprise.
"Shawn has spoken," she urged. "Don't turn him away. We're heading back anyway."
-
Silence filled the car as they drove.
It wasn't until they reached their destination that Shawn broke the silence with a difficult question. "Can you tell me who the father is?"
Candice hesitated, unable to find the right words.
Seeing her struggle, Shawn relented. "Never mind. Has Alex been informed?"
"Not yet."
Shawn continued to stare at Candice as the car came to a halt, as if he had something to say.
Candice had run out of things to say. She simply thanked him before leaving.
As Candice's slender form receded from view, Shawn observed with a complex gaze that was difficult to decipher.
Jessica sighed, breaking the silence.
"Candice's pregnancy was quite unexpected," she remarked.
Shawn's expression hardened, his breath heavy as he retorted, "That irresponsible fool deserves it! He'll reap what he sows! He'll learn his lesson soon enough!"
Jessica paused, noting, "Candice doesn't seem eager to inform Alex."
"That fool brought this upon himself. Who would want to deal with him?" Shawn's frustration mounted, his anger palpable.
Jessica hurriedly attempted to calm him down. She cautioned, "Don't get angry! Children have their own fortune."
"I would have been better off without them!" Shawn muttered under his breath.
He started to question if there was something wrong with his offspring, even glancing at them drove him mad.
Jessica wasn't sure what else to say. She just told the driver to take Shawn home.
-
Candice anticipated old Mr. Elysian needing time to process the news and was unsure of how long it might take.
The following day, Jessica arrived at Candice's doorstep with two maids carrying supplements.
Candice, puzzled, asked, "What are these for, Ms. Kane?"
Jessica shrugged, relaying Shawn's message. "He had these sent over early this morning.
They're for you. He advised you to take care of yourself and avoid overwork at work,
particularly during pregnancy."
Eyeing the supplements carried by the maids. Candice hesitantly declined, saying, "I'm fine, and I can't accept these."
Jessica had donned a contemporary traditional gown today and projected an elegant aura. She smiled warmly at Candice and insisted, "You really should accept them. It's a task Shawn assigned to me, and if I fail, he'll give me an earful. These maids are getting older, and carrying all this is quite strenuous.
"Ms. Renault, should I have them set everything down first? If you truly don't want them, you can discuss it with Shawn yourself, but please don't put me in a difficult position."
Candice couldn't argue with Jessica's reasoning, so she stepped aside to allow the maids to bring the items inside.
Once everything was brought in, Jessica stood at the doorway and announced, "Well, then I'll be on my way."
Shawn had sent over quite an array of items, covering a substantial area on the floor, all of which seemed quite expensive. After a moment of contemplation, Candice decided to call Shawn. This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - ©.
He seemed to be expecting her call, picking up immediately when she dialed his number.
"Shawn," she began softly.
"Did everything arrive?" Shawn asked, his voice strong and firm.
Candice hesitated briefly before responding, "You really didn't need to send all these."
"What are you talking about?" Shawn's tone shifted to a serious one.
"Do you think I'm only doing this because of Alex? I've always wanted a granddaughter to keep me company, so I wouldn't be as frustrated dealing with that fool. Just accept the supplements I've sent. Regardless of whose child it is, I'll be happy as long as the child calls me Great-Grandpa Shawn in the future!"
Shawn's words had a profound impact on Candice, and she agreed while her voice was choking with emotion.
He quickly added, "Pregnant women shouldn't cry."
Candice managed to suppress her emotions and whispered softly, "Thank you."
"You silly girl," Shawn responded affectionately.
Candice's spirits remained low after the call with Shawn. She was unaware that Shawn had been in a car during their conversation.
-
Once the call ended, Shawn commanded in a commanding tone, "Quickly! Take me to Aether Corporation!"
Aether Corporation was notorious in the business for its excessive overtime work. When Shawn reached the CEO's office, there was only one intern remaining.
"Where's Alex?" Shawn demanded.
The intern responded quietly, "Mr. Elysian is in a meeting."
"Tell him to wrap it up and come here immediately. I have something important to discuss with him!"
Shawn was seasoned in the business world. When he revealed his severe side, he had an intimidating presence.
His authoritative demeanor made the intern hasten to fulfill his request.
Alex returned to his office thirty minutes later.
As soon as he entered, he noticed Shawn's stern expression.
Exhausted from days of work, Alex hesitated before asking softly, "Is there something you need from me?"
"What do you think? How dare you even ask me that?" Shawn's pent-up rage erupted
uncontrollably upon hearing Alex's voice.
Locking eyes with Alex, he confronted his grandson sharply, "Are you aware of Candy's pregnancy?"
Alex was arranging papers; his hand froze at the revelation. His brow furrowed quickly. He looked at Shawn coldly. "Are you sure about what you're saying?"
"Do you know what you're doing?" Shawn shouted, his voice becoming more harsh. He wished he could grab the teacup on the desk and hurl it at Alex. His weathered face flushed with rage as he bellowed, "Candy is pregnant, and the child isn't yours!” Shawn glared at Alex furiously as he panted heavily, "You brought this upon yourself! Always pretend like you don't care! You worthless piece of shit!"
