Chapter 0420
Chapter 0420
Sonia had left her phone on the table during the conference, and close to the end, it vibrated.
Quentin was talking and Sonia merely glanced at her phone before tapping a button to hang up.
The caller was persistent, however, and her phone soon began to buzz again. A vague sense of foreboding rose in Sonia's heart. She looked at the display, which showed a Dorrington area code, and her heart began to beat faster. Reflexively, she glanced at Candice.
Candice was already looking at her. She showed no surprise when Sonia glanced over.
Sonia looked into Candice's calm eyes and was stunned for a moment. Before she could react or understand why, Angela spoke, displeased.
"Ms. Summers, could you please answer the phone? The vibrating is shaking the table."
Sonia glanced at Quentin, who also looked a bit impatient. She apologized softly and got up to leave, taking her phone.
But before she reached the door, she stopped in her tracks. "What did you say?" she asked, incredulously. She looked back at Candice, still clutching her phone, her eyes filled with fear and uncertainty.
Candice just looked at her calmly.
Sonia left the meeting room and did not return even when the meeting was over.

During the lunch break, Angela came back with some news, carrying an air of mystery. She looked meaningfully at Candice and said, "Did you already know?"
"Know what?" Candice continued to tidy up the files she was holding, her expression unchanged.
"Sonia was summoned by the police in Dorrington and asked to return immediately to cooperate with the investigation." Angela clicked her tongue. "Do you know what I encountered when I just came over? I ran into Quentin and Sonia quarreling in the rest area. Quentin seemed quite angry, and Sonia was crying the whole time."
Candice raised an eyebrow. "Why was she crying?"
"She said she was being accused unjustly." Angela shrugged. "But I'm still curious about what happened that made the police in Dorrington call."
Candice remained silent. This was her private matter, and she did not really want to spread it around.
Angela sat beside her, talking about her theories for a while, then suddenly fell silent. A faint shadow had fallen over them, and Candice looked up to see Alex standing in front of her. He looked down at her, his expression dull, and his eyes overly calm.
Candice paused for a moment. She guessed Alex was here for Sonia's matter.
Sure enough, the next moment, he stretched out his slender fingers and tapped twice on the table in front of her. "I need to talk to you."
Candice calmly met his gaze for a moment, then lowered her head, mumbled an acknowledgment, and got up to follow him out.
In a nearby coffee shop, soft music played in the background. Candice looked at the cup in front of her, waiting for Alex to speak.
"The time for Jensen's return to Solaris has been confirmed. He will take the plane at ten o'clock next Monday morning to the airport," Alex's expression was business-like. "Jensen is a person who cares a lot about reputation and is very stubborn. Once he forms an initial impression, you will not have a chance to change it." He spoke very seriously, and his dark eyes were unusually solemn.
Candice did not expect him to talk to her about this. After a pause, she suppressed the strangeness she felt in her heart and said, "So, we need to seize this opportunity?"
Alex's eyelashes fluttered slightly. "Not 'we,' but 'you’,” he said casually.
Candice pursed her lips. Aether was different from Burning Star.
No matter what, Aether was a big player in the industry. Even if they were targeting Alex, they would still take into account Daniel Elysian's reputation.
Burning Star did not have such a strong backing.
Candice lowered her head, pondered for a moment, and nodded in response. "I understand." After a pause, she looked up at Alex again and said seriously. "Thank you."
Candice found it difficult to know when Jensen would return, so Alex notifying her was a helping hand.
Alex did not respond. He lowered his gaze, lost in thought. His long eyelashes cast a shadow on his nose. After a moment, his leisurely and deep voice slowly sounded. "Do you plan to return to Dorrington?"
Candice said, "If the police call me, I will definitely go back."
This was also to show her attitude. She would not back down on the matter with Sonia.
Alex nodded and looked up, his eyes dark and calm. He spoke with little emotion. "Don't forget about Jensen."
-
Sonia did not return to the meeting room in the afternoon. Quentin's expression also looked bad. Yondu said he had seen Sonia leave the building on her own.
Angela leaned over and asked, "Is she packing up and sneaking back to Dorrington now?"
Candice didn’t know. She looked at Alex sitting on the other side. When Alex found her earlier in the afternoon, he had only talked about work and not mentioned Sonia at all. Candice frowned slightly and couldn’t help but want to look Alex probingly again.
When she looked up again, her eyes met Alex's.
Candice's eyelashes trembled, and she lowered her eyes in silence, avoiding his gaze.
Later in the afternoon, someone spread the news that Sonia had been summoned back to Dorrington by the police.
Angela denied it repeatedly. "I didn't say anything. I'm not a blab. I don't know how they found out."
Candice didn’t care much about it. She and Sonia were almost enemies now. How could she be bothered about these things?
It seemed that Quentin was annoyed by Sonia's matter. In the afternoon, he did not even have time to target Candice, so she had an easy time.
The day ended quite early as usual. Candice had learned her lesson and was about to call Barox, but as soon as she went out, she saw Barox already waiting outside.
After several gloomy days, it finally rained lightly today. Barox stood there holding an umbrella, looking youthful and vigorous. Despite wearing a thick down jacket, his vibrance was still apparent, though his expression was gloomy.
Candice frowned. Before she could approach, Barox strode over. The black umbrella covered his head, and Barox said with a stoic expression, "I came early to pick you up today."
He looked as though he had been threatened. "You didn't have to come,” Candice said.
"Yana said if I don't come, you won't pay me."
Candice wanted to say that the salary was from her, and Yana could not make decisions on her behalf, but considering Yana's personality, she kept this to herself. Instead she asked, "Are you in need of money?"
Barox didn’t bother to be reserved. "Yes."
"How much do you need?" Têxt belongs to NôvelDrama.Org.
"A couple hundred thousand."
Candice did not know what to say to that and could only take the lead. "Let's go back."
Before she could take two steps, a black Bentley parked steadily in front of her. Sawyer rolled down the window. "Candice, get in the car. It's raining heavily."
Before Candice could speak, Barox said softly, "It's the first time I've seen a secretary driving the boss's car and acting as a driver for the boss. Sir, does your boss know you're using his car as a taxi?"
