Chapter 5
Alex was not close with his mother, Helen.
From the first time Alex brought Candice back home, Helen had never liked her.
Alex preferred some distance between Candice and his family, so unless absolutely necessary, he would never send her back to his mother’s place.
Candice called Alex.
He answered this time. Judging from his tone and giggles, he seemed to be in a good mood.
Candice paused briefly before she said, “You seemed to be in a good mood.”
“Not bad.” Alex admitted without any elaboration. He stifled his giggles and asked, “What is it?”
Candice narrowed her eyes. “Your mother wants me to drop by her house now.”
Alex was silent but Candice heard a thud from his side, followed by Sonia’s cry. She must have bumped into something.
Before Alex ended the call at the next second, he said, “You don’t need to ask me about that.”
Candice sat in the meeting room for ten minutes before she drove to the Elysians‘ residence.
Alex must have forgotten about the first time he brought Candice home when Helen gave her a hard time and even spilled hot water on her hand. He gently stroked her ear and whispered to console her, telling her to be careful of his
mother.
Candice arrived at the Elysians‘ residence and bumped into Helen, who was sending a lady off.
She recognized the lady, so she smiled and nodded.
Candice was beautiful and smart. Close friends with the Elysians viewed her as the future daughter–in–law of the family.
After sending the lady off, Helen looked at Candice. “Where’s Alex? Why isn’t he with you?”
“He’s busy,” Candice said.

Helen scoffed and went to the study room. She then gave Candice an invitation

The event at Morinaga Estate was considered one of the most luxurious parties in Dorrington City. Everyone in the upper crust wanted an invitation and those who managed were either rich or influential.
Candice accepted the invitation card and called Alex again to inform him about the party.
After finding out what happened, Alex said he would come to meet her.
Candice dared not leave on her own, so she waited for Alex at a nearby coffee shop. Ccontent © exclusive by Nô/vel(D)ra/ma.Org.
Alex arrived after a while, but his facial expression was frosty and he did not even bother to conceal the impatience in his eyes.
Candice spotted a pink stain on his collar and she skipped a breath.
Her hand on the coffee table curled unconsciously. She asked, “Want anything?”
“No, thanks,” Alex said coldly as if he was dealing with mundane paperwork. Annoyed, he added, “Give me the invitation card.”
Candice took the beautiful card out of her purse and handed it to him. “The party is this weekend. Do you want a bespoke suit or just a branded one?”
Taking care of such small matters for him was a simple task for Candice as she was meticulous with a nurturing nature.
Alex replied, “Send Sonia the details as well. She’s coming with me to the party.”
Candice reminded him, “The party at Morinaga Estate is important. She’s not suitable.”
“Anyone I bring is suitable.” Alex gave her no chance to argue. He grabbed the invitation card and wanted to leave. O
Candice’s sharp gaze noticed Alex’s phone screen when a notification popped up.
She could not see the content but saw a profile picture with a pink rabbit. She then simply looked away and remained quiet, a sign of her acknowledging what Alex said.
He was right. As the CEO of Aether Corporation, he was someone everyone tried to flatter. Anyone he brought to the party would certainly be suitable.
Alex stood up and started leaving, so Candice started packing her things as well.
Before she got up, Alex stopped and looked at her from a few steps away.

“Don’t call this number anymore. Call my work phone,” he said emotionlessly.
Candice had always contacted him on his private number as his work phone was constantly busy and she might not get to him in time.
He frowned. “I don’t want people to misunderstand.”
Candice knew exactly who he was referring to.
She nodded with slight disappointment in her eyes. “I understand.”
