Chapter 28
Chapter 28
My body started to shiver when I began to process Gabriel's words.
"H-how?" I mumbled, my gaze pleading him to say more.
He smirked, then continued, "Twenty years ago, when the old Duke of Calvet was still alive, Sariel
enjoyed his life as a young master. Many women craved him, and many women belonged to him. He
could almost bathe in the blood of his marked ones. Everything changed when he fell in love with one
and started dismissing others."
"It sounds like a romantic story." I smiled sourly while feeling a dull pain in my heart as if I were actually
jealous of the one he once loved.
"It was, and it was a big scandal," Gabriel sighed. "He rejected the daughter of the Marquess of Balliol,
and openly claimed that he would turn his loved one and marry her."
I envied that human girl more and more, even knowing that their story didn't end well.
"He must have been committed, so what went wrong?" I waited impatiently for the rest of the story.
"The nobles who supported Sariel forced him to wait a few years before turning his lover. They said he
had to secure his position first. He agreed, but he overestimated his ability to control his bloodlust.
Since there were no donors left in the castle, he had to rely on the blood his lover gave him, but it was
far from enough. He was literally starving while feeding his cravings with animal blood. At that time,
drinking blood from the bag was considered a weakness, something unfitting for the future ruler. It was
bearable on normal days, but not during the full moon. On that day, he reached his limit and snapped.
His lust turned into the fury that took away his sanity. He barged into his lover's bedroom and sucked
her dry. Afterwards, he collapsed and woke up the next day to find his lover's cold body lying beside
him. He drowned himself in agonizing despair, tormenting himself with guilt for years. He neglected his
duty and lived in seclusion until his father was killed by poisoning with silver. Only then was he forced
to come back and claim the title, but he has never marked anyone since then," Gabriel stated with a
pensive expression.
I became speechless. My heart cried imagining Sariel's pain. At the same time, my wicked mind told
me to pity myself since I realized that my chances of being marked by Sariel were close to zero.
"Wait… Lilith, do you seriously want him to sink his teeth into you?! When did you become a masochist
all of a sudden?!" My inner voice desperately tried to find any sense in my sudden desire.
Perhaps my hormones finally went rogue. It had to come at some point. Let's face it, the only sexual
intercourse I had ever had, was violent and absolutely unpleasant, to say the least. I could describe
myself in two words: permanently unsatisfied. It seemed that my sexual frustration surfaced the second
I found that one guy who was my type, even though I didn't think I had one. The excitement I felt while
being around him was slowly turning me into some pathetic, weak creature.
I took a deep breath, hoping to calm my disturbed mind. My first day of work turned out to be quite
exhausting. Because I was still phoneless after my personal belongings were taken away at the casino,
all the messages from Sariel were passed on to me through Gabriel. Thankfully, my protector was
thoughtful enough to ask Gabriel whether my work was done and then sent Mike over to pick me up
from the company's headquarters. When I got down, the car was already there waiting for me.
“How's your first day, Ms. Lilith?” Mike called out, cheerfully grinning.
“It was… eventful,” I replied, painting a smirk on my face.
My hyperactive driver took me back to the castle while complementing my features, and making up
qualities that he couldn't have had the slightest idea about. Perhaps, it was his way to boost up my
energy. He did it sincerely, and it was adorable but also annoying. I was too exhausted to silence him,
instead, I let his voice turn into white noise. When I got out of the car he kindly informed me that the
Duke was waiting for me in his study room.
"Just when I thought I could get some rest…" I muttered and clicked my tongue.
Then I sighed and started walking towards the north wing of the castle. I took a deep breath and
knocked at his door.
"Enter," his cold voice called out.
I instantly felt shivers. My heart pounded in anticipation as if it was desperately longing to see him. The
rational part of my mind wanted to slap me, but it was too late for taking any actions, I already entered
the room and got caught up in his gaze. My mind became blank.
"Don't you stand there, Lilith. Come here and sit." Sariel pointed at the chair opposite his desk.
I faintly smiled at him then obediently sat where he wanted me to. He stared intensively at me, his
muscled forearms supporting his perfectly shaped chin. I tried to avoid his sight, but unknowingly, I
drifted away in the depths of his bright grey eyes. I stared at them motionless until I heard his voice.
"Gabriel said you did good today," he tossed, smirking.
My logical brain instantly took over, not letting me make a complete idiot out of myself.
"That is because I'm good at my job," I responded confidently.
"It's fortunate for you that I find you useful. As long as you keep up the good work, I will guarantee your
full protection. Not even your father himself will be able to touch you," he stated.
His words sounded sweeter than any love confession. He played the string that activated a stream of
emotions. My heart squeezed and my body started to tremble. Suddenly, I felt as if some heavy weight
was taken off of my shoulders. Unknowingly, tears started to run down my cheeks, making the weak
smile on my face wet. Sariel glanced at me confused, then cleared his throat shattering my
bewilderment.
I gasped and hurriedly wiped the tears away, then I gazed at him while holding a serious expression,
trying to prove that I didn't lose my sanity.
"Thank you," I muttered, and smiled nervously.
He sighed then said, "I keep my promises. What I said was also to assure you that you will be
protected when giving a statement in front of the council as well." NôvelD(ram)a.ôrg owns this content.
"Don't worry, I will do everything I can so those bastards can be punished for what they did," I swore.
Sariel stood up, then took a step to lean against the desk standing right beside my chair.
"Their punishment may not be as severe as you would like it to be," he claimed cautiously.
"What do you mean?" I instantly predicted to hear an answer that would make my blood boil.
"It's the Adragna family. They have a lot of supporters, so I assume the majority will vote to confiscate
some of their assets, perhaps degrade their titles, but nothing heavier than this," he explained,
clenching his teeth.
"What?!" I burst out, "This is what they'll get for killing people?!"
"Lilith, wake up," Sariel hissed angrily, leaning over me, "Vampires kill humans every day. We suck their
blood, often to the very last drop. Humans are merely our food."
I looked into his emotionless eyes and shook my head. "I know that you don't think that way."
Sariel burst out laughing, "Gabriel told you, didn't he?"
"He told me that you loved a human once and that you wanted to marry her. He also told me that you
don't want to mark anyone because of what happened back then," I confessed without hesitation.
He grabbed my chin and then froze me with his cold stare.
"Let me state it clearly then…" He brought his face close to mine, his cool breath roaming my skin, "I
don't care about human lives. I don't mark them, not because I am afraid of hurting someone, but
because I don't like to restrain myself while having sex. It is something that I don't have to do while I am
with another vampire, but sex with a human can sometimes end up messy." He smirked evilly, then
released the grip on my chin and moved away from me.
Chills ran down my spine, but not because I feared him. I could barely stand him being this close to me.
The exact meaning of his words came later, but I didn't believe him one bit. He hid his true self well. He
built a perfect shield to hide all of his emotions, but I could see through them all because I did exactly
the same. I pretended not to be hurt, but up until now, I had been the most broken person I knew, but
what if he was just as broken as me?
"Why don't you do it then?" I asked daringly.
"Do what?"
"Why don't you have a relationship with another vampire?" I questioned and immediately regrated it.
He glared at me as if my words had made his blood boil. His bright, grey eyes were painted with a red
glow. Unknowingly, I cringed while sitting and lowered my head like a child afraid of its punishment. He
grabbed my hair and forcefully pulled back my head. It hurt… It hurt like he was going to rip my entire
scalp in his sudden rage. I barely prevented myself from making a painful moan. He leaned down,
looking at my face, enveloped in a hurtful grimace.
"Don't cross the line, human, and don't ask anything about my private life ever again," he hissed in a
freezing cold tone.
I gulped. I wasn't sure what made him react in this violent way. I merely pointed out something that
came from his own words. Nonetheless, I thought it wasn't the best moment to test his patience.
"I… I'm s-sorry," I muttered, still suffering from his grip.
He let me go. I instantly covered my head with my hands, testing if all of my hair was still there.
"Tomorrow, Mike will pick you up from work at five. He will take you straight to the Great Council court.
You'd better be prepared," he stated harshly, "Now, get out."
He walked to the door and opened it. I hurriedly nodded my head, then dashed out through the door.
He slammed it as soon as I was out. I nearly jumped up in fear, hearing its sound. I walked back to my
room, blaming myself for not knowing when to shut up. I should have never forgotten that I wasn't
dealing with a human, but a creature that could have been even more cruel and terrifying than my
father…
