Chapter 548
Madison and I felt like we were in deep trouble. A chill ran down our spines.
"Uh... we..." I stammered, my mind scrambling for a good excuse.
Madison was quicker. She immediately explained, "Sir, you're mistaken. We're the new cleaning staff here. We just got lost."
She pulled out a cleaning ID badge from her pocket.
I felt a wave of relief and quickly jumped in. "Yeah, yeah, we just got lost. That's all."
The guy stared at us in doubt, then took a closer look at our ID badges. After a long pause, he grunted.
"Cleaning staff? This floor is for the CEO's offices. What are you two doing up here?" His tone was getting sharper. "And earlier, you were lurking by the door, spying, weren't you—"
"Enough, let's not make this harder than it needs to be," a man interrupted, his voice calm.
I turned around and was surprised to see Yvan. He'd somehow appeared at the door and was now sizing us up.
"Mr. Jaeger!" The guy greeted him right away, his tone softening. "These two—"
"It's fine," Yvan said with a smile, waving it off. "It's normal for new staff to get lost around here. Just be a little more careful next time."
He then gave Madison and me a nod. "Thanks for all your hard work. If you need anything, just let me know."
With that, he turned and walked away briskly.
I stood there frozen, unsure of what to do. Someone was being this polite to me for the first time, especially in such an awkward moment.
Madison elbowed me and whispered, "What are you doing? Come on, thank him!"
That snapped me out of it, and I quickly nodded toward Yvan as he walked away. "Thank you, Mr. Jaeger!"
The guy grunted and mumbled, "Mr. Jaeger has always been

and when to make a move."
He gave us a meaningful look. "You two better be careful. There are things you just don't have the pull to get into."
With that, he turned and walked away without looking back.
That was when I noticed a small "J" engraved on the guy's cufflinks. He had to be one of Yvan's trusted men.
I was skeptical about what he'd said. Yvan wasn't exactly the type to be that straightforward. His leniency toward me and Madison might not have been out of kindness.
I was deep in thought when Madison suddenly tugged at my sleeve.
"Evelyn, we need to leave now," she whispered urgently. "We'll risk blowing our cover if we stick around any longer."
I nodded and hurried after her, but my mind was all over the place. The infiltration was risky, but thankfully, nothing major went wrong. Still, we didn't get much out of it.
I kept wondering what Murphy and Yvan were really up to. What were they fighting about so hard? All these questions kept swirling around in my head.
One thing I knew for sure, though, was that neither of them had good intentions. I needed to figure out what they were up to fast-only then could I save Zachary and Ethan.noveldrama
Back at the warehouse, our hideout, Madison plopped down into a chair. "Phew, can't believe I made it out of there. If I knew it was going to be that close, I wouldn't have done
it not for anything!"
I gave a wry smile. "Now you're scared? You're the queen of the underworld, Maddie."
Madison glared at me. "I only did it because I felt bad for you. I couldn't say no."
She sighed. "But seriously, Evelyn, you're taking it so far. You're basically going up against the entire elite class to save Zach."
What do you think?
