Chapter 1055 Change of State Mind
Chapter 1055 Change of State Mind
Although Hunter couldn't see, he could imagine Sydney's cheerful smile on the other end of the phone. "I accept your congratulations. You have my word. When I get promoted, I'll return and back you up."
He thumped his chest with a resounding thud.
Sydney could hear it clearly through the phone, and her heart trembled along with it.
'Is this guy trying to break his sternum?'
"Thank you for your kindness," Sydney hurried to say, hoping to stop Hunter from pounding his chest like that.
Hunter stopped as expected and turned toward his assistant, who was standing by. "We don't need such politeness between friends. Well, the connection is bad. When I come back, how about we get together for a meal?"
"Sure!" Sydney agreed readily.
The call ended, and Sydney put down the phone.
She looked at the screen with a smile and shook her head.
Across from her, Sean asked, "Was it Mr. Cohen?"
"Yeah," Sydney nodded, saying, "He learned about the rumor online and asked about my situation."
"Mr. Cohen is really a good man," Sean said, rubbing her chin.
Sydney smiled in agreement. "Yes, he is. By the way, what were you trying to say?"
Sean's lips parted as she was going to resume the former topic.
But the door to the office was pushed open.
And Sean's words were caught in her throat.
She felt helpless.
'Is it fate?'
Not only she, but Sydney was also speechless and amused.
But their amusement was short-lived because outside the office door came Luke's voice. "Syd."
Sean's face paled, and her pupils contracted. She gave Sydney a pleading look. "Ms. Raines..."
Sydney was equally nervous.
Luke's sudden visit took both of them by surprise.
Now it was too late for Sean to hide in her lounge.
Luke had walked in.
Sean heard the footsteps behind her, and her face grew paler by the second. Her body trembled and her head lowered toward her chest.
Her fear for Luke was plain to see.
In fact, she was feeling more guilt than fear.
She didn't want him to find out about her pregnancy.
That was the main reason she had been avoiding him.
Sydney saw Sean's anxious look before turning to look at the approaching man. The meeting was inevitable, and she sighed inwardly.
Now they could only play it by ear.
It would be fine as long as Luke didn't find out the truth.
At that, Sydney cleared her throat and winked at Sean when the latter looked up.
It was a signal for Sean to pull herself together and not appear so nervous.
Or else, it would only raise Luke's suspicion.
Receiving the signal, Sean realized her improper state. After giving Sydney a grateful look, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath to calm down.
She needed to adjust her mood and conceal her panic.
Clenching her hands into fists, she managed to sort out her thoughts and appear as composed as usual.
She was a professionally trained secretary and knew how to regulate herself.
Sydney finally put her mind at ease.
Withdrawing her gaze from Sean, she turned to look at Luke and asked, "What brings you here?"
"To see you and to discuss the matter online," Luke replied as he stopped next to Sean.
Sean shivered but forced herself to calm down.Belongs to © n0velDrama.Org.
She silently pumped herself up, determined not to reveal any weakness. Then she turned around and greeted Luke calmly with a slight bow, just as she always did. "Mr. Chase."
From the moment Luke entered the door, he noticed her presence.
However, he feigned indifference and strode over.
But when Sean took the initiative to greet him, he could no longer pretend not to see her.
For some unknown reason, her stiff greeting ignited a fire in his heart.
It was perfectly usual, but he somehow felt upset.
Yet, he couldn't articulate how he wanted her to treat him.
Luke stood there, gazing at Sean without responding, lost in thought.
Sean's heart raced as a chill crept over her body.
She didn't understand why Luke was staring at her like that.
But his intense gaze made her increasingly uneasy.
"Ms. Raines..."
Sean raised her eyes and gave Sydney a pleading look.
Sydney was at a loss as to what had triggered Luke's strange behavior and could only shake her head in frustration.
She was about to speak up to defuse the tension when Luke suddenly spoke.
He crossed his arms and fixed his eyes on Sean. "What? You're not going to hide from me this time?"
His words left Sean pale-faced and Sydney stunned.
"Luke..." Sydney began, but Luke raised his hand to silence her.
He continued to stare at Sean. "You think I didn't know you were hiding in Syd's lounge last time I came here?"
Sean's face turned even paler.
Sydney gasped in surprise.
She had thought that Luke didn't know.
But it turned out that he had known from the beginning.
Then Sean's pregnancy...
She didn't think Luke knew about that.
If he did, he would have come to find Sean for confirmation.
As long as he was still in the dark, it would be easy to solve.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to hide," Sean said, lowering her head and biting her lower lip. "You said you didn't want to see me, so I hid. I didn't expect you to arrive suddenly. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been here."
Luke turned more livid, and his annoyance grew stronger.
Laughing coldly, he said, "I didn't expect you to be so obedient."
His tone was sarcastic, with a tinge of sour annoyance.
A trace of bitterness flashed in Sean's eyes. "You're my boss, and isn't it for me to obey your orders?"
Luke snorted and stopped talking.
He didn't like her answer, but he had to admit that she was right.
He had no ground to argue and chose to shut his mouth.
"Alright, let's not talk about that," Sydney interjected, winking at Sean. "Go get Mr. Chase a cup of coffee."
Sean took the hint and smiled gratefully at her. "Sure."
With that, she hurried toward the door and soon disappeared.
