Baby
Maya.
I was angry at myself for not screaming when I found Zane in my house. I hated myself for being foolish enough to believe that he wasn’t going to hurt me. Clearly, he was a psychopath who preyed on women who were attracted to him. The room I woke up in was quite good, luxurious in fact. However, it was devoid of personality as if it was a guest room. I could hear voices outside but I couldn’t see anything since the windows were boarded with wood. Thankfully, the light was on and the room was well ventilated. It also had a fan and a restroom. At least he was kind of enough to think of my needs.
Eventually, the door opened. To my surprise, the person who walked in was not Zane. It was a young woman. I wondered if she was also a captive of his. I had read a novel about a man who kidnapped woman and kept them in his house, calling them family. Was this a case of that?
“Who are you?” I asked the woman.
“I’m Celeste,” she said, setting a jug filled with juice on the table. She placed a glass aside. “I brought you some juice. Would you like food?”
“I don’t want anything from you. Who are you?”
“I’m sorry. Alpha Zane will be back as soon as he can. There are a lot of things going on.”
“What the hell. Is that really true. He is a werewolf?”
“I am, too.”
“I don’t believe this sh! t,” I said.
“Anyway, I can’t say more. I’m here to take care of you. You join us for dinner if you’d like.”
“I’m allowed to get out of this room?”
“Of course you can. We had only locked the door because you were asleep.”
“Well, let’s go.” I said, eager to leave that place. The house, rather mansion was huge and seemed to house a lot of people. There were kids running around the yard and a few adults here and there. The place felt quite homely. Had I not been surrounded by total strangers, I may have felt quite happy there. I had been living by myself for a very long time and it had got quite boring.
After dinner, Celeste took me outside for a tour around the pack house. It was so weird saying that out loud and meaning it. Pack house. I had only heard of that in movies and books that I thought were purely based on the extraordinary imaginations of writers. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think these supernatural creatures existed. I would have believed aliens existed before I could believe that werewolves really existed. Now that I knew it, I was beginning to wonder if science fiction was really fiction or fact. What if aliens really existed and were just waiting for the perfect time to attack those of us who lived on earth?
There was not much outside. It was just a regular luxury property in the outskirts of a city. There was a large front and back yard, nice cars, a small vegetable garden, and a swimming pool. There was a smaller house within the fenced enclosure as well. As expected, everything was expensive and sophisticated. Celeste showed me around before taking me back to the room I had been staying in. I asked her for my phone but she said she didn’t know where it was. It was probably locked in the alpha’s room.
At night, I struggled to fall asleep. I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling, still thinking of the shocking things I had discovered existed. Suddenly, the door opened and I whipped my head to see who had opened it.
He stood at the door, watching me. Seeing him made my body come alive instantly. He looked exhausted as if he had got beaten up. I sat up on the bed.Contentt bel0ngs to N0ve/lDrâ/ma.O(r)g!
“What happened to you?” I asked.
He didn’t say anything, but walked into the room and sat on the bed next to me. He wrapped his hands around me. Instead of feeling angry like I should have, I felt good and relaxed. He held me so tight as if his life depended on it. After over a minute, he pulled away. “How are you doing?”
I rolled my eyes, forgetting all the nice feelings. “How am I doing? And you’re asking it so casually, as if you didn’t just kidnap me.”
“I had to, because you were not going to accept to come and I needed to ensure you were safe. If I hadn’t brought you, there’s a chance that you wouldn’t be alive anymore. I’m sorry for how I did things. I really didn’t have a choice.”
I sighed. “Well, at least I was taken good care of. Because of that, I can believe you. I’ll need to leave as soon as possible, though. I can’t stay here, locked away from the world. I need my phone.”
“I’m afraid I can’t give that to you until you come to terms with your new reality. This secret affects many people’s lives and I need you to be sure that you can keep it. If this gets to the wrong people, it can cause great harm.”
“But you guys are stronger than humans so why should you be worried.”
“We may be physically stronger, but we are significantly fewer and humans have developed so many weapons that can end us. In the ancient days, humans weren’t much of a threat but things are different now.”
I sighed. “I’m not going to talk about this with anyone.”
“What about us? Like I told you, you are my mate. I need you by my side, Maya. Especially now. You have no idea what I have been through lately. So many terrible things have happened, and the hope of being with you was the only thing that kept me strong. Why don’t you give us a chance?”
I sighed. “I really don’t know what to say about that. I need time to think about this.”
I stared at his face and realised I had made a big mistake. His fiery eyes caught mine and I felt my insides exploding. I found myself leaning closer and capturing his lips with mine. The kiss was short and slow but it was enough to make me want more.
“Close the door, please.” I said.
Zane tilted his head and smiled.
“This doesn’t mean anything,” I said.
“Whatever you say, baby.”
