Chapter 32

“Where has she gone to,” Benson muttered as he parked in his garage.
He knew she had blocked and it bothered him. He feared she wouldn’t come back. He’d not be surprised if she did. It would be typical of her. She was different from all the women he had had. They always wanted more either because of his enormous cock or his money. But Sarah was different. He knew she could decide to stay away from him for what he did.
He felt helpless whenever he thought about it. If he had been a tad bit more responsible, everything would be normal. But he was helpless and not in control of himself. He blamed what happened on the alcohol that he took but deep down he knew he wanted to have her badly. He also knew the chances that the same 5hjnh would happen if he wasn’t drunk were very high. He felt disappointed in himself self. Like, he had refused so many women in the last, some of which were named in front of him. What was different with Alita? He couldn’t quite tell. He was flustered about it.
He leaned on the door of his and crossed his arm over his chest, tightly squeezing his biceps. He looked down at his shoes without really looking. He was way up in his head battling between numerous thoughts and different possibilities. Had she shut him out completely? Would she come back? She had to, for Julie’s sake. He would make sure of it. But could do anything about the situation? He had never felt so incapacitated and foolish.
He finally took the walk to the door. It seemed longer than usual to get to the door.
Even though he knew the number won’t go through, it gave him some consolation to dial it again. At least he was trying.
He drawled the command to ask the door open and had to say it again before the door opened. He sank into the couch closest to the door, throwing his phone to the side and closing his eyes.
He thought about drinking to cool off but kicked against it as alcohol was at the center of the dilemma at hand.
“I am sorry,” he opened his eyes and spoke with an airy voice into space as he reclined, wishing she would hear him and appear from wherever she was and all will be okay.
After a moment in silence and self-contempt, he said, “where is a reset button when you need one?”
He pressed his lips against each other and flickered his lashes, then the doorbell rang. He turned and saw Luke at the door. He pursed his lips, lifted himself off the couch, and then removed his suit jacket and unbuttoned his collar after struggling with removing his tie. He opened the door for Luke after drawing a long breath and letting it out.
“Morning… Sir,” Luke greeted him.
“We saw each other this morning, Luke,” Benson rolled his eyes and jerked his head side. “We literally sat next to each other in the meeting so drop that act and put the files down on the table. You already know I am babysitting and today,” he tightened his jaw.
Luke walked to the table and dropped the files then turned to face Benson, saying, “Yea, I know you are many sitting today and you are not happy about it so I have to be careful not to do or say something out of order that’ll piss you off. You are not the best person to be around when you are like this,” Luke turned his face away towards the end of his statement. “I should head back to work now,” he added.
“Really?” Benson raised his brows at Luke as he leaned forward.Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
“Sir, I don’t know what to say right now.”
“I am not the best person to meet when I am upset, Luke, really?” Benson stared at him expectantly.
“I will not say anything, with all due respect, I love my job now more than ever,” Luke looked at the ring on his finger and imagined a wedding ring on it, then smiled. “My life just started and I need to be able to fund it all the way through so forgive me if I am playing safe here.”
“Luke, calm your frenzy,” Benson spread hand his hand in front of him. “I am not mad enough to fire you yet so hang up acting funny, and man, marriage is not worth the excitement you are throwing at it. Believe me, I have been there and it’s not what you are thinking it is. Yeah, maybe at first, the first year would be amazing and all love-Dovey until you begin to see a different person emerge from the woman you married,” he said looking straight up at Luke who quietly wearing a blank expression. “I’m telling you, it just means you would bang one chick and live with her for the rest of your life with supernatural help. Can you sacrifice that?”
Luke was quiet, giving a thought to what Benson had said. “Yes, I can sacrifice that. I have had so many but she is the best and I can’t afford to let her pass. She is the funniest and most serious person you’ve ever met. And she has the body of your dreams and cares about you much as you care about her,” A wide smile grew on Luke’s now dreamy face while he gesticulated. “You sit there and just stare at each other not saying a thing but somehow in that silence a million words are being said and that turns out to be the best conversation you’ve had throughout the day. You would do anything to keep that treasure with you.”
“You are finished man, she’s bewitched you,” Benson shook his head. In his mind, all he thought about, while Luke defended the life ahead of him, was Alita. He managed to hide the sadness he felt. He thought maybe he did feel that way about Alita.
“Call it whatever you want, man, I don’t care, some call it luck struck, head over hills in love, but I just know I have never felt the way before. It’s all new to me and I want to keep it forever, and it feels good to be bewitched. You should try it.”
Benson slapped his hand on his face while he nodded sideways. “This is bad, really bad, you are far too gone down the drain. Nothing I say is going to get you back, is it?” His forehead crinkled. He threw his hand in the air, saying, “I wish you good luck, man, I mean what are the odds that you get a divorce after the first year, huh, very slim…” he jerked his head up and down continuously. “Wait…” his eyes rolled into his head. “I didn’t know Sarah was funny. She was always serious, loading me with paperwork and meetings. The best I have seen is a simper. Uh, I hate work ethic. It so official that you never meet the real person beneath the very necessary act.”
“Man, I have been wanting to talk to you but you have been such a grouch these days that there was a fifty percent that if we had this conversion I might lose something important or get a demotion,” Luke simpered.
“Okay, a lot of things I don’t know about myself…” Benson folded his hand over his chest and stood off the couch. “Go on,”
“Right… this might seem a little overboard and personal but I am your personal assistant so I am probably not crossing any boundaries, hopefully,” he squinted his eyes jotted his shoulder, s and pocketed his right hand.
“I have a good feeling about this,” Benson said sarcastically.
“Here goes nothing,” Luke caressed the back of his neck. His tone dulled as he said, “we rarely talk these days. You are hardly around even… you drink a lot, talk less, you’re angrier…” he paused to observe Benson’s countenance and then continued, saying, “I told you, the clubbing and the drinking never do you good. It only worsens the situation.
“Tell me about it,” Benson murmured to himself.
“Life is better when you are focused on one and just one who’s worth being with. Once upon a time I patronized moving from one girl to another having sex here and there and drinking too but it only made it worse. And I missed the days with… well I am better now and I found someone even better.”
“I guess we have both been to bad places with girls, right?” Benson said
“Yes…I guess,” Luke gazed upward. “I have been with you for long enough to know that something is eating you up from the inside out and it’s bad and it shows. Whatever it is, you have to fix it before you’re far too worn down to repair.”
“Sarah has made you a therapist, hasn’t she?” Benson twinkled his eyes and feigned a smile.
“She a made me a lot of things more,” Luke grinned.
