Chapter 703 Valedictorian River
Milo quickly checked and found five crisp hundred-dollar bills under the cutting board.

Sebastian hadn't coordinated with Molly beforehand; she had silently taken his wallet and placed the money there herself.
"Molly really gets me."
Molly beamed with pride. "Of course, only I truly understand you."
When it was time to find a place for lunch, Molly found a riverside picnic club on her phone.
Molly bit her thumb. "Sebastian."
"Teddy's too young."
"He can't even eat yet."
"The smoke will be too much."
Molly stopped pleading and started negotiating. "Sebastian, if you take me to the
picnic, I'll stay at the Chase Villa with you tonight."
Sebastian, who had no principles when it came to Molly, asked, "Where is it?"
A half-hour drive later, they arrived at the riverbank, which was packed with cars. It was
the weekend, and the place was bustling. As they walked down the slope, Patrick carried Teddy and held Vera's hand. The area was surrounded by dirt roads and the smell of barbecue from the woods.
Children played by the river, and some high school students in uniforms were scattered around.
Shawn was very pleased with the spot his daughter had chosen. He always enjoyed the world of young people.
With that, all the stuff Susan had packed in the trunk came in handy. Randall had joked about Susan's random packing, but it turned out she had thought of everything.
Although they hadn't brought any food, there were vendors nearby selling various meats and vegetables.
Patrick went to check the freshness of the food.
Shawn started chatting with people, while Susan and Randall fetched their things. Molly found a spot and began clearing the stones. Vera, the mom, wandered around with Teddy in her arms. The weather was hot, and Teddy, who hadn't slept enough, whimpered in her arms.
Soon, a vendor arrived with a grill and charcoal. "This was ordered by a Mr. Olteran. Should I set it up here?"
"Where's my husband?" Vera asked, patting Teddy's back.
"Mr. Olteran said he went to rent a mat for the baby to play on." The vendor set up the grill and left.
A little while later, Patrick returned with a new mat, unwrapped it, and spread it on the ground. "Vera, put Teddy down so he can sleep."
Vera looked at Teddy. "He's not settled yet. I'll hold him; he'll cry if I put him down."
Soon, Sebastian and another vendor arrived, both carrying skewers of meat and vegetables, which they placed on a nearby rack.
Shawn, leaning on his cane, walked over and asked, "What's this river called? The current looks strong, but I've never heard of it." He had been a politician in Zandonick and felt he should know.
Vera handed Teddy to Patrick and spread a blanket and thin quilt on the mat for Teddy to lie on. Susan sprayed insect repellent around to keep the bugs away from Teddy.

The local vendor, lighting the grill, explained, "We call it Valedictorian River. Every April and May, students and parents come here for good luck. It's also the season for fish, so the riverside picnic clubs open up."
As the vendor finished speaking, Susan, who had been spraying insect repellent, paused and looked at him. "Do we have to eat fish?"
"That's what the locals say. These weeks, it's mostly high school seniors from nearby."
Susan glanced at Randall, who was setting up the rack, and sat on the mat, deep in thought.
No one noticed Susan's change in demeanor. Vera remarked, "No wonder there are so many high school students today."
Sebastian, who had learned about it later, explained to Shawn, "This used to be part of the neighboring city. When Zandonick expanded, it was included. It used to belong to another city."
Shawn, reminded of recent events, said, "This place is nice, with mountains and water, and beautiful scenery."
But then Shawn asked, "Is that a legend or true? If it's true, in 18 years, I'll bring my grandson here to eat fish before his exams."
In Patrick's arms, Teddy whimpered and then fell back asleep.
Patrick held Teddy horizontally, letting the baby grasp his finger, and Teddy miraculously slept soundly.
Once everything was set up, the vendor left after placing the seasonings and giving instructions.
Susan, known for her cooking, was expected to take charge. Instead, she picked up some fruit and drinks. "Molly, Vera, I'm going to chill these in the river. We'll have them later."
With that, she walked off with the fruit.

By the river, Susan placed the fruit and cans aside, built a small stone enclosure, and looked back at her family. No one noticed her.
Susan turned back to the lake, conflicted.
She glanced at Randall again, then crouched by the shore, quietly taking off her canvas
shoes and socks, placing the socks inside the shoes.
Then she stood up, lifted her skirt, revealing her gleaming feet, and slowly stepped into the water.
"Miss, what are you doing?" someone nearby asked, rushing over.
Susan replied sweetly, "Catching fish."
With one leg in the water, she slowly lowered the other foot in.
On land, Randall looked back. "Where's Susan?"
Vera, who had just bought a deck of cards to play with Shawn, stood up and saw the
familiar figure in the water. "Isn't that Susan?"
Molly, who had been lagging behind Sebastian, also stood up and looked at the riverbank. "That's Susan!"
Shawn, elderly and slow, needed help to stand. Patrick assisted him, and Shawn looked
out. "Oh my, Susan's in the water again. One minute she's climbing trees, the next she's in the water. What's next, flying?"
