What Separates Me and You by Victoria Wilson

Chapter 27 Keep the Child

Lewis did not set foot into the bedroom the entire night. When Josephine woke up the next morning, he was no longer in the mansion.

She stayed in bed and stared at the ceiling for two whole hours before finally getting

out of bed.

Although she had no appetite, she still made some oatmeal and forced herself to eat two servings of it. Then, she took the medicine prescribed by the doctor.

At around five in the evening, someone rang the doorbell.

She opened the door to find Lewis’ assistant, Conrad Berg, standing there.

“Good day, Mrs. Alvarez. President Alvarez sent me to get you.” Conrad nodded at

her politely.

Josephine’s brows knitted together, puzzled. Conrad couldn’t read sign language, so she did not sign anything.

“It’s your birthday today, Mrs. Alvarez. President Alvarez said that you should wear the new clothes you bought yesterday.”

Josephine was surprised. She had thought that Lewis was just comforting her to make her feel better when he said that he would celebrate her birthday with her the day before. She didn’t expect him to mean it at all. She pursed her lips and stood there without moving.

“What is it, Mrs. Alvarez? Do you not wish to go?” Conrad inquired.

Josephine remained silent. He had just burned her belongings yesterday, and now, he was inviting her to a meal, to go shopping, and to celebrate her birthday together as though everything was perfectly normal. Her feelings meant nothing to him.

Looking at how conflicted she was, Conrad couldn’t help but sigh. “No matter what it is, Mrs. Alvarez, President Alvarez is your husband. Wherever you are, that will be his home. Legally speaking, he’s yours.”

Josephine lifted her head and stared straight into his eyes in bewilderment.

Conrad continued, “Since he’s still willing to come back and celebrate your birthday with you, and as long as he still cares about you, it doesn’t make sense for you

to just

give up on him and let someone else have him.”

Conrad did not like Sierra. She did not pull her weight in the company and would always order him around. Even the department managers were polite to him

because he was Lewis’ assistant. But because she had Lewis backing her up, showed absolutely no respect for the higher-ups in the company.

Sierra

He foresaw himself suffering at her hands if she were to one day take Josephine’s

position.

“Mrs. Alvarez, if you still care for President Alvarez, please do not push him away into someone else’s arms. You need to learn to fight for yourself.”

She pressed her lips into a thin line. Conrad’s words had stirred up a storm within her.

However, she was pregnant now. She could not abandon her child to go after a man who did not care for her. And since Lewis refused to get a divorce, he would learn

about the child sooner or later. When that happened, she might not be able to protect her child too. Belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - All rights reserved.

Her thoughts were a mess, and she felt like there was a rock weighing down on her heart. She went upstairs to change.

This was not a matter of picking one or another. She did not have the luxury of choice. As long as she still cared for Lewis, she would not be able to push him away.

That was a secret that she had held in her heart for the past twenty years. She had watched him grow from his adolescent years up into adulthood. For two whole decades, he had occupied every crevice of her heart. There was nothing else but him. She could not deceive herself.

The clothes Lewis bought her yesterday were thick, which was perfect since the weather had turned chilly.

She rummaged around and finally chose a red sweater and a pair of white pants. She looked very celebratory with her choice of attire, and her hair was tied up into a ponytail.

Conrad was pretty astonished when he saw her make her way down the stairs.

She looked every part a youthful girl in her late teens if one ignored the gloominess in her eyes which had built up over the years. If she were to be in school, a single smile from her would be enough to brighten up someone’s day.

Perhaps Lewis had seen such a smile from her before.

Alas, humans never seemed to appreciate what came to them easily.

When Conrad finally snapped out of his thoughts, he made a polite gesture to show her the way out.

Josephine nodded and followed him. When he saw the Bentley parked on the porch,

he thought of something and turned to tell Josephine, “Before I forget, please wait here, Mrs. Alvarez. I need to go to the garage and get another car.”

With that, he pulled out two keys from his pocket, parked the Bentley in the garage, and then brought the Porsche out.

Conrad did not know why Lewis made him swap cars, but Josephine knew why he did that.

He had actually paid attention to her question last night.

She looked up to the sky, trying to force the tears back. No wonder Lewis could disregard her however he pleased. That was because…she was too easily appeased.

Conrad brought her to a restaurant. It was frequented by couples and was jam- packed with people.

However, there was an empty table by the window. Conrad led her there and said, President Alvarez will be here once his meeting ends. Please hold on, Mrs. Alvarez.”

Josephine smiled and nodded. Conrad did not stay on much longer. He left soon. after giving some instructions to the manager of the restaurant.

Josephine sat by the window, looking out at the colorful neon lights outside. The high-rise buildings were a dazzling sight to behold, and she could hear the loud. voices of people having fun outside.

An uproar came from a short distance away. She turned around to have a look at what the commotion was all about. Someone was proposing.

Everyone in the restaurant gave their blessings to the couple. Some of them clapped, some of them shouted, and some even squealed with joy.

The lady was so touched that she covered her mouth and had tears streaming down her face. The gentleman held her hand and slipped a ring onto her finger. They hugged each other tightly amidst the well wishes from the onlookers.

A smile formed unconsciously on Josephine’s lips when she saw the scene before her. How fortunate they were to be able to hug the person they loved so openly.

Josephine looked down at her bare fingers.

On the day she got married, Nancy had said that a mute like her would not be having. a wedding ceremony and that it would be a joke and an embarrassment for her to be

on the altar.

Lewis had said that he was busy and that they should just register their marriage and be done with it.

They did not receive any blessings at all.

Over the years, he gave her many things. From clothes and shoes to precious. jewelry. However, never once had he given her a ring.

That was something that symbolized love. One would never give just anyone a ring.

Lewis was just done with his meeting when Conrad returned to the office.

Conrad entered Lewis’ office to find Sierra there too. She was playing on her phone, bored to her wit’s end. She really had no regard for the fact that she was supposed to be working.

“I’ve got it all arranged, President Alvarez.”

“Okay.” Lewis nodded and picked a document up from the table. He made a quick job of flipping through it and finally signed it after he was done.

When Sierra saw that Lewis had come back from his meeting, she quickly ran up to him. She shot Conrad a glare and raised her chin, saying, “Why are you still here?”

Conrad was about to remind Lewis of the time, but when he saw that he was busy going through a document, he quietly produced a small box from his pocket and placed it by where Lewis’ hand rested.

“I’ve bought the present you requested, President Alvarez. I’ll leave it here.” Conrad then excused himself from the office.

Sierra noticed the box and raised her brows. Just as she reached out for it, Lewis put his hand over it.

Sierra was taken aback. “It’s not for me?”

Lewis did not answer her. In fact, he didn’t even look at her as he took the box and stashed it in his pocket. Then, he continued to go through the document he had in front of him.

His reaction pis sed Sierra off. She didn’t even have to guess to know that it was for the mute.

She clenched her jaws tightly. Suddenly, she bent down and leaned close to Lewis. Honey, I’m pregnant,” she whispered.

“Abort it.” That was all the reaction Lewis gave her. He continued to sign the document as he said that.

Sierra gritted her teeth and said huffily, “I’m serious, I’m not joking!”

Chapt

Lewis paused and turned to look at her. Sierra winked at him, Indicating that she was telling the truth.

His gaze lingered on her face briefly. A while later, he said, “Keep it, then. If it isn’t mine, I’ll see to it that both of you cease to exist.”
