When the Boss’ Lady Became His Sister-in-law

Chapter 8

“Rhett…” Vincent was also scared, but meanwhile, he was shocked. Rhett, who always hated strangers getting close, acted so out of character.

“Rhett, sorry. Ruby had a car accident. She needs a kidney transplant. Kristin owes Ruby one, and I was afraid she might pull something sneaky, so I brought her home to stay for a few days,” Vincent quickly explained.

Rhett didn’t make a peep. He never liked to poke his nose into other people’s business, especially Vincent’s business.

“Get lost, kid,” Vincent said, reaching to grab Summer when he saw Rhett wasn’t responding.

But Summer clung to Rhett’s legs, hugging him like a koala bear.

Though small, Summer had learned to read the room. He could tell Vincent was a baddie, always picking on Mom, but this baddie seemed afraid of the man he was hugging.

Kristin was panicked and felt nothing but heartache. He was just a five–year–old child. Nôvel(D)rama.Org's content.

“Summer, Mommy will take you to find Daddy, okay?” Kristin coaxed softly.

“Then hurry and find that jerk to take this brat off our hands!” Vincent spat, unable to control his temper and pry Summer off.

Rhett looked at the little boy, smearing snot and tears all over his leg, and instead of getting mad, he felt a chuckle coming on.

A five–year–old kid….

“Are you my daddy? Will you be my daddy and protect Mommy?” Summer looked up innocently and asked.

Vincent’s face went darker. Did he believe a five–year–old could say something like that? It had to be Kristin’s doing, right?

“Summer…” Kristin choked up, soothing Summer. “Listen, he isn’t your dad.”

Summer felt disappointed and slowly let go when he saw Rhett didn’t respond to his question.

Watching Vincent leading Summer and Kristin to the backyard, Rhett said nothing but looking down at his dirty pants.

“Mr. FitzGerald…” The assistant hurried over, flustered, preparing a change of clothes for Rhett. “You go wash up and change into something clean. I’ll throw these pants away.”

The assistant knew Rhett well. Anything unclean had to be gone.

“No need,” Rhett said indifferently, walking away.

The assistant gasped in shock. No need?

Goodness, trying to figure out what Mr. FitzGerald wants was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Once in the car, Rhett looked out the window thoughtfully, tapping his long, good–looking fingers. “York, it’s been six years. Haven’t we found the person I’m looking for?”

The assistant gripped the steering wheel nervously. “Mr. FitzGerald, that night at the hotel… the surveillance didn’t work, so nothing was recorded, and you didn’t have me investigate right after you left…“.

Rhett’s gaze darkened. “Are you blaming me?”

“No… Mr. FitzGerald, I didn’t mean that. It’s just, it’s been so many years, it’s hard to dig.” York thought he was trying to do a good deed.

If they found that woman, with Rhett’s temperament, he’d skin her alive and throw her in the fryer.

York had worked for Rhett for seven years and knew him best. Rhett was a man with a strong psychological need for cleanliness. Those women trying to climb into his bed never ended

well.

Six years ago, some woman managed to get into their untouchable Mr. FitzGerald’s bed!

Because of that, several high–level executives at the FitzGerald Group got dragged into it. causing a major internal overhaul. After all, not many could scheme against Rhett.

At first, Rhett didn’t want to find that woman, thinking it was only someone else’s tactic against him and that she would come out with her demands in a few days.

Two years passed, yet there was still no sign. That made Rhett lose his patience.

In the third year of her disappearance, Rhett had his assistant start investigating, but too much time had passed. Where should they even begin with?

York even wondered if Rhett had been drugged that night, which had all been a dream.

“Ferris still won’t talk?” Rhett’s voice grew colder.

“He only admits to spiking your drink that night, but he won’t confess to putting a woman in your room,” York was just as helpless. Ferris was one of the high–ups at the FitzGerald Group, and who knew what had got into him to dare to plot against Rhett?

As he rubbed his temples wearily, Rhett closed his eyes. “Keep searching,” he urged.

Rhett was unsure if his relentless determination to find that woman was driven by a desire to

punish her or by some other mysterious motive.

Sometimes, he would dream about that night.

“Don’t touch me. Please don’t touch me.” That woman pleaded, “I’ll give you money. A lot of money. Please, let me go.”

All he remembered was that the woman was crying and begging.

Rhett admitted that it wasn’t just the drink. He did desire that woman.

The room was dark. Rhett hadn’t seen the woman’s face, but her scent was deadly allure.

“Stop the car!” Suddenly opening his eyes, Rhett commanded in a low voice.

Kristin… He wasn’t sure if it was only his imagination, but Kristin’s voice and faint body scent reminded him a lot of the woman from that night.
