Chapter 892
Chapter 892
When William and Emelie toasted the table of old friends, everyone stood up.
Elias curiously asked, "Will, what are you drinking? Is that sparkling water?"
He wasn't even talking about William's inability to handle alcohol. With 99 tables of guests, if the newlyweds drank real alcohol, they'd be out cold long before the end.
However, this wedding needed them to stay on their feet. So, their drink was substituted with something else, which everyone tacitly agreed to.
William glanced at his glass and smiled. "Sparkling water."
Emelie raised an eyebrow. "Mine's alcohol."
Her drinking tolerance was like Schrödinger's cat. Half a bottle of whiskey could knock her out if she wanted to be drunk, but when she didn't, she could drink forever.
Everyone was impressed.
Elias said, "That's why you should just listen to Ms. Pierce from now on, will. Join us in the Cult of Brainless Wife Worship"
William pondered about it. "Is it just you and me in this cult?"
Elias slung an arm around his shoulders. "There's Jayden too."
Jayden declined with a laugh. "I'm not joining."
Elias looked at him in disbelief. "You're refusing?"
He quickly tried to stir the pot. "Did you hear that, Ms. Smith?"
Yelena Smith, Jayden's wife, was a graceful, beautiful, and intelligent woman. She was also the heir to a century- old pottery family business.
She smiled at her husband. Everyone who knew her understood that the prettier her smile, the more dangerous her thoughts.
Jayden quickly cleared his throat, wrapping his arm around his wife and saying softly, "The name of this cult sounds like it's for people with low IQs and mental issues. Darling, you wouldn't want your husband to become like that, would you?"
If Ashley wasn't around, Jayden would've just said, "You wouldn't want me to end up like Elias, right?"
Yelena kept smiling.
Jayden was known as the most emotionally intelligent and socially savvy of their Capebatt City clique. He was always navigating situations with ease.
However, in front of his wife, all his tricks failed. He was awkward and flustered.
He definitely didn't want to sleep on the couch tonight, nor did he want to lose the privilege of caring for their daughter once they returned home.
He quickly pulled his wife aside and sweet-talked her until he was forced to join the cult, just to get her to speak to him again.
Ashley, in high heels, stepped on her hapless husband's foot. "Elias, stop embarrassing yourself."
Emelie had never noticed how amusing this group could be. She said, "A toast to everyone!"
However, they replied, "We should be toasting you, Ms. Pierce."
Emelie smiled. "Let's all drink together then."
William also switched to half a glass of real alcohol. On this day of fulfilled wishes, he drank a toast to his true
brothers and friends.
Interestingly, they addressed Emelie, Ashley, and Yelena using their maiden surnames and titles like "Ms. Pierce", "Ms. Smith", or "Ms. Thornton", rather than calling them something like "Mrs. Middleton".
It wasn't about making a point or being stubborn. They all knew that these women were strong, independent individuals who could hold their own. They weren't defined by their marriages, nor did they lose their identity by taking their husbands' last names.
After they set down his glass, Jayden remembered something. "I was really surprised when Elias asked me to join him in Mercianna, saying it might be Will's wedding."
Elias, ever ready to talk about his wife, said, "I just did what my wife told me to. She said Ms. Pierce invited her and said that I should bring Jayden and his wife along to Will's wedding.
"I wasn't going to argue. However, when Will didn't show up last night, we all got nervous. I almost spilled the beans to Will."Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
Their gathering in Mercianna was all thanks to Emelie secretly sharing her plans with Ashley, who then spread the word, all while keeping William in the dark.
Jayden raised an eyebrow. "I wasn't worried. I knew that Will would show up, sooner or later."
William looked down and promised Emelie, "I won't be late again. I won't make you wait anymore." Emelie met his gaze. She believed him.
After the toast, Emelie went to the restroom, and William waited for her in the hallway.
Lyle came over for a private drink with him and suddenly said, "Will, I have a question for you."
William nodded. "What is it?"
"Back then, was it really because I helped your wife escape, and you thought I betrayed you, that you kicked me out of Capebatt City? Or was there another reason?" Lyle asked.
He referred to Emelie as William's wife due to the complex relationship that he previously shared with her. It was his way of telling William that he would draw a clear line between himself and Emelie in the future. William looked down for a moment before meeting his gaze. "What other reason could there be?"
