Chapter 894
Chapter 894
William felt a sharp pain in his lungs again, almost making him cough. However, he didn't allow himself to.
If he started coughing, his face would pale, and Emelie would worry. Since it was their wedding day, he didn't want to ruin it no matter what. He skillfully adjusted his breathing to suppress the urge.
However, after all that suspense, Lyle casually added, "But in the end, the test confirmed that she wasn't pregnant, so they didn't need to swap the samples. They just gave you the real result."
William was speechless.
Lyle, oblivious to the flicker of anger in his eyes, continued, "But at the time, she thought that the test result was fake and believed she was pregnant."
William pressed a hand to his chest, resisting the urge to scold Lyle for intentionally scaring him. Why break such important news like it was some suspenseful story?
However, as the words formed in his mouth, he realized that it was just a false alarm. It was better to scare him than have Emelie experience a second miscarriage.
He was relieved. "It's good that she wasn't pregnant."
"Just a small misunderstanding," Lyle said nonchalantly. "You've had plenty of misunderstandings between you two. What's one more?"
That was true.
William looked at the empty glass in his hand, its clear surface reflecting his eyes. "There won't be any more misunderstandings from now on."
From down the hallway, the sound of a diamond pendant clinking reached them. He looked up to see Emelie gracefully making her way toward him, holding up her dress.
Lyle waved at Emelie in greeting and then headed back to the banquet hall.
As she approached William, Emelie asked curiously, "What did Lyle say to you?"
William took her hand, his thumb brushing over her ring.
Without hiding anything, he said, "He mentioned that they all thought you were pregnant back then."
Emelie froze for a moment, then she replied calmly, "After my first miscarriage, my body became much weaker. I had a check-up, especially on my uterus, and the doctor said it would be difficult for me to conceive."
William felt a pang in his heart. He exhaled slowly, glancing around.
When he saw that no one else was in the hallway, he gently pushed her back a few steps. He pinned her against the wall and lowered his head to kiss her.Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
This wasn't a kiss driven by desire, but rather a way to express the deep regret and pain in his heart as words couldn't capture it. Hence, he used this instinctive gesture, like an animal comforting its mate by licking it.
Emelie instinctively clutched his suit jacket. Even though she was wearing heels, she still had to tilt her head up to kiss him, given William's height of 6 feet and 2 inches.
William noticed this and adjusted by lowering his head further to meet her height.
Despite his pure intentions, Emelie couldn't help feeling a bit self-conscious, worried that someone might walk by at any moment.
Being seen wouldn't be the end of the world, but she really didn't want to hear gossip about how the bride and groom couldn't wait for the wedding night and were caught passionately kissing in the hallway. She cared about her reputation, after all.
"That's enough," Emelie murmured, pulling back slightly. "My lipstick's smudged."
William finally let go of her lips and glanced at her lipstick. Indeed, it was smudged.
Emelie shot him a glare before pulling out her lipstick. The skirt she wore had large pleats and a specially designed pocket, perfect for stashing a tube of lipstick
However, she didn't have a mirror.
Just as she was about to use William's eyes as a makeshift mirror, he took the lipstick from her. He opened it and twisted the tube up. He gently lifted her chin with his other hand, carefully reapplying the color to the spots he'd smudged.
The scene suddenly reminded Emelie of how a loving husband of ancient times would help his wife with her makeup.
As William lowered his gaze, he suddenly said, "I didn't use protection those times because I wanted you to get pregnant."
Emelie looked up at him.
She opened her mouth to speak, but William lightly touched her lips with the lipstick, stopping her.
He spoke softly, "I knew then that your heart was starting to soften toward me. If you could have a child, that child might also bring you comfort."
It wasn't that William thought Emelie would give up on life if something happened to him, and he wanted to use a child to keep her going. Instead, he knew how much she loved children.
When they lost their first child, she grieved for a long time. Even long after, she couldn't talk about it without tearing up.
She loved children, so he thought giving her one might be a good thing.
Also, he believed that she was going to marry Wesley, and if they did, they wouldn't have children. In that case, a child could also serve as a shield against the world's prying eyes.
Lastly, he had a selfish reason: he didn't want her to forget him. He wanted something of theirs to remain in this world.
