A Successful Career After Divorce

Chapter 27 Friend’s Challenge

“Can you double-check some of the technical terms with me?” Ranita asked, and Steve immediately stood up and sat next to her. He handed her his pen and leaned in. “Go ahead, I’m listening.”

“Take a look at this section,” Ranita said as she leaned in closer to Steve. Their voices were low but focused, and their good looks made them seem even more harmonious together.

Through the slats of the screen, Brendon could see Ranita’s profile – delicate and fair with pink lips that moved as she spoke confidently with raised eyebrows.

Brendon pursed his thin lips while furrowing his brow high.

“Brendon, are you going to eat anything?” Shannon asked as she approached him. She took hold of his arm and batted her eyelashes playfully. “What’s wrong? You look like your mind is elsewhere.”

Shannon knew exactly what was distracting Brendon – Ranita!

She felt frustrated enough to scream!

“I’m fine! What do you want to eat?” Brendon turned away from looking at Ranita’s table and picked up the menu.

“You order something for yourself first; I’ll just have whatever you’re having.” Shannon replied before Brendon randomly ordered a few dishes including steamed fish which he blurted out, “With cilantro.”

After the waiter left their table, Shannon pouted, “Brendon, when did you start liking cilantro?”

Brendon was taken aback by her question.

He pursed his lips apathetically before replying, “Just once in a while.”

He had forgotten that neither he nor Shannon liked cilantro; it was actually someone else who enjoyed it sitting at another table chatting happily with one of his friends.

Brendon knew that Ranita loved cilantro. It was during one of their outings to discuss a business deal when she was quietly complaining about the lack of cilantro in her fish dish. She ate with her cheeks puffed out like a little hamster, and Brendon realized belatedly that he had been startled by her actions, even choking a little in surprise behind her back.

Since then, whenever they went out for meals together or attended banquets where steamed fish was served, Caleb would always be instructed by Brendon to add cilantro, which seemed like it became a habit over time.

“Just occasionally,” he repeated himself quietly under his breath before overhearing Steve being praised by an admiring Ranita at the adjacent table, “Dr. Pearson, you are truly amazing! If this technology can succeed, then many patients will benefit…”

“Thank you for your kind words! There is still much more for me to learn!” After pausing briefly, Steve propped up his chin smilingly saying, “You’re also very impressive! Your word choices are precise; You’re one of the best translators I’ve ever met – no wonder why you’re such an outstanding student from Kurima Foreign Studies University!”

“Don’t flatter me too much, Dr. Pearson!”

“You’re amazing!” Steve really admired Ranita. If she hadn’t married Brendon so early, he might have made a move already!

When Steve went outside to answer his phone, Brendon stopped him. Steve was friendly with his friend and smiled with narrowed eyes, asking, “Brendon, what’s up?”

Thinking of the scene just now, Brendon felt like something had pricked his heart several times. He was restless and couldn’t explain why this feeling arose. He frowned and spoke coldly, “When did you become so close to Ranita?”

Steve was also tall and had long legs. He met Brendon’s gaze calmly without haste or delay and said honestly, “Ranita is quite famous in Kurima Foreign Studies University. We met by chance and later I asked her to help translate academic reports.”

“Ranita is very professional and excellent in this field.”

As soon as he finished speaking, Steve added another sentence, “Aren’t you divorced? I thought you wouldn’t be interested in her affairs!”

Brendon tasted the words from Steve’s mouth. Please check at N/ôvel(D)rama.Org.

Academic reports are highly confidential things that showed that Steve trusted Ranita! And that last sentence even sounded a bit provocative to Brendon.
