Chapter Eighteen
“You know about the fact that I’m broke too?”
“Of course dimwit. I know everything about you.” Anderson smiled.
“What do you want from me?” Alexa seethed.
“Nothing. I just want to help your brother, but to do that… I need you.”
“You need me?” Alexa asked and Anderson nodded after which Alexa chuckled in some sort of mockery.
“You see, I want you to be my maid, that’s all. You’re not exactly my spec, so I don’t want anything else.”
“You sure, cause some minutes back, you were ready to ravage me like a dog without training.” Alexa laughed and Anderson huffed.
“I was in some sort of heat.” He seethed.
“Now I can see you’re a male bitch.” Alexa laughed.
“Stop it.”
“And what if I don’t?”
“Then I’ll reduce your pay from $1000 to $500,” Anderson said and at that, Alexa’s eyes widened.
“You don’t mean that, do you?”
“Of course I do.”
“You’re going to pay me Ten hundred dollars per month for working as a maid?”
“Yes. And point of correction, per week, not per month.” Anderson corrected and at that moment Alexa felt her blood turn to blue.
“Per… Per week?” Alexa stammered.
“Yes. Is it too small?”
“When should I start working?”
“Next week Monday, if you don’t mind.”
“Of course, I don’t.”
“OK then. See you then.” Anderson said.
“Wait… Isn’t there a form or something I need to fill out before I’ll officially start work?” Alexa asked.
“Not really. I didn’t think of that.”
“But I need something to show my brother that I finally got employed… Under you.” Alexa said.
“Why? Why do you need proof to show to your brother?”
“Well, it’s a long story.”
“Then just summarize it!” Anderson rolled his eyes.
“Well, I kind of lost my temper when he was talking me into accepting your job offer and I hit him,” Alexa explained.
“Wow! That’s huge.”
“I know! I haven’t apologized to him yet, so I was thinking if I showed him something that states that I finally got the job he wanted me to have under the person he admires then…”
Anderson interrupted before she could finish.
“Wait. Your brother admires me?”
“Well, yes. He sees you as a role model, but I’ll make sure he doesn’t model your character when it comes to your bedroom.”
“OMG.”
“I’m sure this isn’t the first time you’re hearing of someone choosing you as a role model. No need to be too dramatic about it.”
“Why didn’t you tell me before?”
“Because I didn’t deem it necessary,” Alexa replied bluntly.
“Your paycheck is increased to Fifteen hundred dollars thereof,” Anderson muttered, but just loud enough Alexa heard.
“Huh?” She asked confused.
She sure heard fifteen hundred, but she wasn’t sure.
“I’m increasing your paycheck to fifteen hundred dollars.” Anderson thinned his lips.
Alexa’s blood froze.
“You alright?” Anderson stared at her.
He wasn’t sure she was anyways. She was staring blankly at him and stood frozen.
“Hey.”
“Hey,” Anderson called again, but she didn’t reply still.
“Please don’t die in my house,” Anderson begged and shook her shoulder.
“Huh? Huh? What happened?” Alexa asked as soon as she gathered herself back.
“Holy shit! Thank goodness. I thought you were going to die.” Anderson breathed a sigh of relief and at that moment, tears started running down Alexa’s cheeks.
Anderson looked up at her and he frowned in concern.
“Hey. Dimwit, what’s wrong?” He asked solely out of concern.
“Thank you,” Alexa muttered.
“What for?”
“It’s just since my parents died, no one has cared about me or my brother. This is the first time I’m hearing fifteen hundred dollars in years.” Alexa sniffed and wiped her tears with the back of her hand.
“It’s the first time someone’s saying he’s going to give me that.” Alexa continued.
Anderson bit his lip gently.
“Oh, I understand. It’s alright though.” Anderson said and his instincts kicked in.
He walked over to Alexa and wrapped her in his arms.
Alexa’s eyes opened wide in surprise.
What was this?
A whole Anderson Green hugging her?
‘Was he trying to get her on his bed?’ She thought.
‘No idiot! It’s genuine. And I’d appreciate it if you hug him back.’ The tiny voice inside her said and she growled at it.
When Anderson hugged her tighter, she got her mind off the little voice, and unsure… She wrapped her arms around him too.
After about a minute of absolute pure emotions, Anderson broke away from the hug.
Now, they realized… They were in an awkward position and they both clamped down on their lower teeth in anxiousness.
Alexa spoke first.
“I don’t know what that was for, but thank you.”
Anderson didn’t reply.
He only gave her the sweetest smile she’d ever seen.

I got to the bus station and stared hard at the piece of paper in my hand.
Anderson gave it to me right before I left his house.
It was a piece of paper with his best poem written on it and his signature on the back.
After staring, admiring, and re-feasting my eyes on his awesome signature, I turned the paper to the front and started reading the poem.
Still, on the first line and about to move to the second, I heard a familiar honk.
The bus was here.
I hurriedly got inside before I lost a seat.
Finally seated, I turned to the piece of paper again and started reading the poem.
It was comprised of complicated English-coded words, but I tried my best to decode their meaning.
After about 10 minutes into the drive, I got to my stop and came down.
Looking at the piece of paper, I knew Jace would be more than happy.
I got home and everywhere was silent.
“Where’s Jace?” I muttered.
I ran up the stairs and held the knob on his room door and pushed through it, but it was locked.
“Jace.”
“Jace!”

Still no reply.
Then I remembered I could look through the keyhole, and when I did… I almost died.
There was Jace on the floor whilst foaming in his mouth.
Rushing down to the old attic, I picked up a hoe and went back up.
Slicing the door with the hoe, I finally gained entrance and Jace was looking too white and pale.
“Jace!!!” I screamed in horror.
