Chapter 145
Mikayla watched everything with cold eyes. Huxley's head bandages hadn't even been removed before Logan's family couldn't wait to deal with Huxley's situation.
Winona said gently, her pregnant belly already showing. "Uncle Jorge, Huxley's injuries are almost healed! We thought it would be good for Huxley to start working at the company soon."
The Lindstrom family was pressuring her, and she wanted to hold her head high within the Lindstrom family. She needed to expedite her plans. Mikayla's previous threats had delayed her. Huxley had to get into the company and perform well.
Today, she chose to come because Mikayla's husband was also present. She hoped his presence would make Mikayla more agreeable and give her a chance to get close to him.
Three days ago, Mikayla's wedding had nearly driven her insane with jealousy. It was so extravagant... Her wedding with Jaxon in Xosa was nothing compared to Mikayla's grand affair. Their wedding had barely made a splash because of Mikayla's high-profile proposal. Now, Mikayla's wedding was world-class.
Her past wedding now seemed utterly insignificant.
Everywhere she went, people gushed about Mikayla's wedding. Those who knew looked at her with scorn. As a daughter of the Salvatore Group, she had never endured such contempt. She used to enter stores and be treated like royalty, but now she had to listen to snide remarks from staff. On the day of the wedding, she didn't get a good look at the man. Now, seeing him, she had to admit he was quite something.
Compared to Jaxon's gentle and courteous demeanor, this man was both noble and elegant. However, his eyes were filled with unwavering affection as he looked at Mikayla from beginning to end. How did Mikayla get so lucky?
Mikayla curved her lips into a smile. "If Huxley is ready to work, he can return to the company. But he'll need a different department." She didn't want Huxley to cause issues at such a critical time.
"What do you mean, Mikayla?" Huxley yelled, ignoring Winona and Mildred's earlier warnings.
He was increasingly irritated by Mikayla. So what if she married a rich guy? He wasn't the top entrepreneur in Xosa! How dare she act so high and mighty and tell him to change departments!
Nodding at his father to stay calm, Mikayla continued, "Huxley, I'm your cousin. Show some respect! Any regular employee who took unsanctioned leave for as long as you did would have been fired by now. I'm merely suggesting a department transfer."
"What makes you think you run the company?" Logan boomed, clearly furious.
Mikayla replied smoothly, "I don't run the company. But Huxley was in my department. He left without a word, causing us a ton of extra work. We've since adjusted. He can't just waltz back in. A transfer is necessary." Mixing truth with falsehood, Mikayla knew they wouldn't catch on and resolved never to let Huxley near her team again.
At this moment, Mildred stepped in, smiling, "That's fine! Huxley has grown up. He's eager to contribute, even with his bandages still on."
Winona shot a sharp look at Huxley, signaling Huxley to hold his tongue.
Mikayla inwardly scoffed. Anyone could see if Huxley had truly matured.
Jorge said, "Okay, Logan and Mildred, rest assured. I will find a suitable position for Huxley in the company."
Logan answered, "Jorge, think carefully about Huxley's placement before making any decisions."
Carlos watched the entire scene
with cold eyes and didn't say a word. Mikayla stared at Logan with a look that said everything they did was justified as if their family owed them something. She felt a twinge of
unease. Though she had weet
Winona before, she wasn't sure if Winona would wait for her until the project was over... "Bring it on! I'm ready for anything," Mikayla said with a confident smile.
"Wow, Carlos, you're quite the catch! My cousin has great taste. She truly upgraded by choosing you over Jaxon." Winona remarked, her voice laced with hidden meaning.
Winona's goal was clear, she intended to bring up Mikayla's past with Jaxon to create some tension. There was no way Carlos wouldn't care.
But Mikayla was ready. She replied with a playful glint in her eye, "If I had married Jaxon, do you think you'd still have a chance to be a mother?"
She knew Winona's visit wasn't just
net
for idle chit-chat. Bringing up Jaxon was a calculated move to make Carlos suspicious. Too bad for Winona, her plan would likely fall flat. Carlos was, by far, the sharpest and most composed person here.
Winona's face stiffened for a moment before she continued, "Jaxon and Mikayla were childhood sweethearts. Growing up together and being together for so long, it's a pity you didn't end up together."
"True! If it weren't for you stepping in, I might've married Jaxon. That would've been a real shame! Let's thank my dear cousin for coming between us." Mikayla said with a charming smile, effortlessly countering.
Carlos's gaze was almost unreadable, his voice steady as he said, "So, it was your interference that brought her to me?" After a pause, Carlos turned to Winona with a slight smirk, "We should indeed thank you for making this possible."
Winona's smile faltered, her mask slipping for just a moment.
"Come on, Carlos, let's check out the kitchen. Let Winona dwell on the past all she wants." Mikayla didn't have time for Winona's petty games. "Well. Carlos agreed warmly, taking Mikayla's hand and heading towards the kitchen.
Seeing their affection stung Winona deeply.
Once Carlos and Mikayla were in the kitchen, Sylvia shooed them away. "This isn't the place for you two. Go have some fun outside." Sylvia then instructed a servant to bring out some fruit and pulled the sliding door shut behind them.
Carlos and Mikayla found themselves outside again. "How about we take a stroll in the garden?" Mikayla suggested.
"Okay!"
They made their way to the garden, sitting on a wooden bench and basking in the gentle spring sunlight. The warmth was soothing, neither too hot nor too cold.
Eventually, Mikayla broke the comfortable silence. "Carlos, do you care about my past with Jaxon?"
She had never asked him, even

though she knew he wouldn't be easily swayed by Winona's provocations. His arm tightened around Mikayla's as Carlos kissed the top of her head, and replied softly. "I care. But I'm glad you didn't end up with him. You chose me, and that's all that matters."
