Deadly Affairs

It was already late by the time I got home. I parked my car in the garage and entered the living room. I met only Abigail. She was asleep on the couch so I tapped her.

She waked up when I tapped her the second time and blinked severally to wake her sleepy eyes.

“You’re back.” She said when she saw me.

“Yeah. Where’s Molly? And why are you sleeping in the living room?” I asked.

“She’s asleep in her room and I was waiting for you.” She answered as she yawned and stretched her body.

“Okay. I’m back now. You can go to your room.” I said. She nodded and stood up.

“Good night ma’am.” She said as she walked slowly into her room.

“Night.” I muttered before heading to Molly’s room.

I opened the door carefully and walked towards her bed. I crouched beside her before kissing her good night on her forehead. Then I turned off the light and closed the door carefully so as not to wake her up before heading to my room.

I sighed in relief when I pulled off my heels. My legs were finally free. I cleaned off the make-up from my face and took off my clothes. Then, I proceeded to take a warm bath.

When I was done, I dried my body with a towel before putting on my night dress. I was about to finally retire to bed when my phone rang. It was Grandma Shelly.

“Good evening Grandma.” I said the moment I picked the call.

“Evening. How are you? How was the date?” She asked at once. She couldn’t even wait to hear the gossip.

“You set me up.” I replied making her snicker.

“What? I didn’t set you up. The investor wanted to meet you so I set a date for you both.” She answered.

“Why didn’t you tell me that the investor is your grand nephew?” I asked.

“He told you that?” She asked back.

“Yes, or is he not related to you?” I asked again.

“He is. It’s just really surprising that he told you that. I thought he wouldn’t even want to speak to you or cancel the date.” She said.

“Don’t worry. My charm isn’t dead yet.” I boasted making her chuckle.Text © 2024 NôvelDrama.Org.

“That means that there’s good news. What happened?” She asked.

“Well, he asked for another date.” I said.

“What?? Really??” She asked in surprise.

“Yes. Not just one but ten.” I answered. I didn’t want to tell her that he confessed his feelings to me yet. If I did, she would try to coarse me into getting into a relationship with him.

I don’t want to be in a relationship because someone talked me into it. I’m not even interested in him so I when I finally reject him, I don’t want to feel guilty towards her.

“Wait.. what??? Ryan, the same one I know asked you out on not just one but ten different dates?” She asked again, every word dripping with surprise.

Not just her, I was also surprised  when he told me that.

“Yes. The same Ryan you know.” I answered.

“So, what did you tell him? Did you agree to his request?” She asked. She sounded really giddy and happy. I guess she really wants us too hit off but too bad she won’t get her heart desire.

“Yes. I agreed to his request.” I replied which made her scream like a high school girl that got asked out by her crush. I had to move my phone from my ear when it got too loud.

“You really agreed to it?” She asked again.

“Yes. But I’m not sure it’s a good idea.” I told her.

“Why not. Ryan’s rich, sweet, caring and with what you have just told me, he is obviously interested in you. You both are off to a great start, I’m sure you guys would hit off quickly.” She said.

“That’s not it. It’s just….”

“Is it because of Molly? Don’t worry, I already told him that you are a single mother. Since he’s still interested in you despite that, my guess is that he doesn’t really mind.” She said.

I guess she doesn’t know that Ryan already knows about me and my kid. Probably because he didn’t know I was the one until he met me. I just hope that he doesn’t tell her about our encounter six years ago.

I didn’t tell her myself because I figured that she would be really disappointed in me and that is what I don’t want.

“I just don’t want you to get your hopes high. Be it ten or fifty dates, my answer will still remain the same. I can’t get into a new relationship.” I said.

“You can’t tell now. Who knows, in the next two months, you both would be planning your wedding together.” She answered.

“You have a very wild imagination.”

“Imaginations can sometimes become reality. Don’t worry, only tomorrow will tell.” She said.

“I just hope that tomorrow won’t disappoint you.”

“It won’t. I’m hundred percent sure about it.” She said.

“If you say so.” I said in defeat. I didn’t want to continue arguing with her.

“So when are you having the next date?” She asked.

“Next week’s Sunday.” I replied.

“The Sunday after Molly’s birthday?” She asked again. She remembers?

“Yes.” I answered.

“So, about Molly’s birth day, how’s it gonna be?”

“Just a small family gathering. We decided not to make it big.” I answered.

“So, am I invited?” She asked.

“Always. Molly will be very happy to see you.”

“I know she has missed me a lot. It’s just you that’s trying to hide her from me.” I laughed out when she said that.

“I’m not.”

“Whatever. Just tell Molly that her great grand mom is coming to see her this Saturday.” She instructed.

“I will.”

“Okay. Since I’ve heard what I wanted to hear, you can go to bed. Good night, sweet dreams and don’t forget to dream about Ryan.” She joked.

“Good night.” I answered and she ended the call.

Grandma Shelly is as funny as always. I smiled as I placed my phone on the nightstand. I was about to sleep when I noticed the shadow of someone standing in front of my room’s door.

Since the light in the passage was on, I was able to see the shadow’s feet in my room even though the door was locked. Abigail and Molly were asleep so it can’t be them standing in front of my door.

Fear gripped me when the thought of someone sneaking into my home crossed my mind. Then I remembered that I locked the doors.

“Who is that?” I wondered within myself.

I picked up the lamp next to my bed as a weapon. Then I tip toed towards the door. I slowly held the door knob and pushed the door open, making whoever it was that was leaning on the door to fall down immediately. I was about to attack whoever it was when I noticed it was Abigail.

“Wait!!” She screamed as she used her hands to defend herself from my assault.

“What are you doing here? You are supposed to be sleeping” I asked her as I put the lamp down and helped her up.

“I thought I heard something, so I came to see what it was.” She answered.

“Where did you hear the noise?” I asked her.

“In your room.” She answered.

“Oh, it must be when I was on a phone call.” I said.

“I see. So sorry for disturbing you.” She apologized.

“And sorry for almost ruining your face.” I answered and she chuckled.

“Alright. Good night.” She said before she walked back to her room then, I retired back to bed.
